MONROE - Five Mat Rats still are quite alive in their quest for a state wrestling title and a few more might still have a glimpse of hope, too.

Dusty Burkhalter, Trevor Gorr, Aaron Hesgard, Ryan Hughes and Reave Lincoln all brought gold medals back from their 1995-1996 division at Saturday's Madison La Follette regional wrestling tournament, which featured more than 500 entrants.

First- and second-place finishers automatically earn slots at the state wrestling tournament at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on Friday and Saturday, March 21-22.

Five more Rats placed third and, as a result, still could receive a call if any other athletes cannot participate.

Troy Gorr, Kevin Klopfenstein and Eric Timm earned bronze in the 1995-96 age class, while Cole Murray took third in the 1999-2000 group and Traiten Gorr took third in the 1997-1998 class.

Drake Ingold took fifth in the 1999-2000 group, while Dempzy Foley, Dylan Scace and Sam Kind all failed to place. McKenzy Foley and Jacob Kind both took fifth in the 1997-1998 division and Parker Ingold did not place.

Terri Holmes pinned down a fourth-place finish in the 1995-1996 group.

Graham Kuckuk took home a fourth-place honor last Sunday in a tourney in Dodgeville. The Rats next take aim at an invite in Darlington on Saturday.
