BRODHEAD — Getting pushed back a day for regionals is not ideal — especially when the sectional is just 48 hours later and temperatures forecasted in the 90s. But for the eight teams slated to be at the WIAA Division 2 Beloit Memorial Regional, it was probably safer that way.
“We were supposed to compete on Monday but because of the factory explosion in Rockton, just 4 miles from Beloit Memorial High School, the meet was pushed back a day and moved to Brodhead,” Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said.
The Chemtool fire lifted heavy smoke and toxic gas into the air. An evacuation for the surrounding mile was set to last a week. Officials for the regional track meet determined the school was simply too close to the accident to have a safe meet — especially if the winds changed direction.
We had 19 individuals that finished in the top four and all four relays to make it through to sectionals. We scored points in all 18 events and had multiple athletes score points in 10 of the 14 individual events.Eric Jubeck, Monroe girls coach
“This leaves us one less day of recovery compared to everyone else at our Sectional on Thursday, and because of this our goal was to advance as many as possible with as little effort as possible. It didn’t matter as much how many team points we scored or how fast we ran and how far we jumped, threw, and vaulted,” Mosher said.
While the Cheesemakers chose not to focus on team points, it was hard to not notice how well the collective teams did. Both Monroe’s boys and girls teams scored more than 180 points and strutted off the track as team champions.
“It was exciting to have both boys and girls win regionals,” Mosher said. “For the boys, we went into the meet with the expectation that we were going to win, and this was our fifth regional championship in a row. But we also emphasized to not take it for granted because it’s not an easy thing to do.”
Girls coach Eric Jubeck called the championship the highlight of the season.
“We had 19 individuals that finished in the top four and all four relays to make it through to sectionals. We scored points in all 18 events and had multiple athletes score points in 10 of the 14 individual events,” Jubeck said. “It is an impressive accomplishment to score 187 points in a regional meet and this gives us momentum for sectionals on Thursday.”
The boys team scored 184 points and will send 18 athletes in 20 events to the sectional meet, scheduled for June 17 at Whitewater.
“We have athletes in every event but two, and some events have multiple athletes competing,” Mosher said.
All four boys relay teams took first place. There is also a competitor in each field event, and two hurdlers in each event.
“Just like at conference, our strength really is our team depth,” Mosher said. “We have some guys that are going to be busy on Thursday. JT Seagreaves will be competing in four events, Jason Carpenter, Lucas Sathoff, and Egor Sereda in three events, and quite a few in two events.”
Mosher said his squad can make a big push to qualify several individuals for state.

“I think our guys can step up and surprise some teams. On paper we aren’t supposed to do as well as we have in past seasons in regards to number of kids and events qualifying for state,” Mosher said. “But I’ve been so impressed with the teams’ focus and competitiveness that I wouldn’t be shocked if we have some surprise performances and at have some athletes qualify for the state meet that we didn’t necessarily expect. A perfect example is Brady Schuh in the vault. Just a couple weeks ago he was vaulting 10-6, which is a very nice vault, but set a personal best of 12-6, which is now flirting with being a great vault. If he can improve again, he could not only have a chance of qualifying for state, but perhaps even earning a state medal.”
Brodhead-Juda will compete in 10 events at sectionals. Gage Boegli will compete in three events, as will Syler Weeden.
On the girls side, Monroe is sending three to sectionals in the triple jump alone — Taylor Jacobson, Sierra McGuire and Lauren Coppes, who beat Brodhead-Juda’s Ellie Yates by just a half of an inch for the final qualifying spot.
Freshman Aleigh Zettle will compete in four events, with just one a relay. Bre Lambert is in three events at sectionals, as are Taylor Jacobson, Lauren Coppes, and Sophie and Sierra McGuire.
“Thursday will be a challenge, as every year our sectional is one of the toughest in the state,” Jubeck said.
Brodhead-Juda qualified to compete 18 times at sectionals. Freshman Addison Yates will compete in four individual events. Kalena Riemer will be in three events, as will Jada Burkhalter.
