New Glarus-Monticello head cross country coach Steve Wehrley announced his retirement after 35 years of coaching the Knights.

NEW GLARUS — New Glarus-Monticello cross country coach Steve Wehrley annouced his retirement at the end of the 2022 season.

Wehrley began coaching the New Glarus-Monticello cross country program in 1987 and officially retired from coaching after the 2022 season.  For 35 years, Coach Wehrley has led the program.

Coach Wehrley is a Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association (WCCCA) Hall of Fame Inductee, thanks to the accomplishments and reputations of the NGM program over the years.

In his time as the head coach of the program, Coach Wehrley and NGM Cross Country earned 28 total Conference Championships (14 boys, 14 girls) and had 19 teams qualify for the WIAA State Meet (8 boys, 11 girls).  Under Coach Wehrley, NGM Cross Country has finished as a State runner-up three times.

Former assistant coach Dennis Haak will be taking Wehrley’s place.

Coach Haak has been an assistant in the program since 2018 and has worked closely with WCCCA Hall of Fame Head Coach Steve Wehrley for five seasons. A four year cross country runner at Belleville High School (Class of 2011), Coach Haak qualified for the WIAA State Meet all four years as a runner, finishing second in state his senior year.

Coach Haak is also on staff as an assistant coach with the Sugar River Track and Field program and has developed positive relationships with many student-athletes.
