SOUTH WAYNE — The Black Hawk boys basketball team sees an opening in the Six Rivers East, which makes one goal stick out in particular.
“Compete for a conference championship,” Warriors coach Trent Wyssbrod said of his team’s expectations for this winter.
Last year’s team finished 8-9 overall, but 6-2 in conference play — one of just two teams above .500 (Monticello was unbeaten at 9-0).
Black Hawk graduated three all-conference players from last season — first-teamer Clayton Stietz, second-teamer Thatcher Schliem, and honorable mention Jexen Stietz. However, the Warriors bring back a host of talent.
Honorable mention sharpshooting guard Lucas Milz (6 ppg) is back, as are senior guards Dempsey Schliem (4 ppg) and Elijah Shelton (3 ppg). In the post, Dayton Burmeister (4 ppg) returns, as does senior center Nathan Figi. Throw in junior Seth Dunlavey, who Wyssbrod called a “very good defender and rebounder,” and the Warriors have a solid lineup to open the season.
Wyssbrod said a challenge for his squad will be consistent scoring, but that the team’s defensive presence will be a major strength.
In the end, he sees his team trying to match up for the Six Rivers East title with Monticello and Barneveld.
“They both have good, consistent programs,” Wyssbrod said.
