Glarner Knights, Cardinals score conference victories

SOUTH WAYNE — Black Hawk faced its closest call of the season, fending off Mineral Point 59-55 in a nonconference game Jan. 25. The Warriors (14-0) led by nine at halftime, but the Pointers (12-3) never went away. 

Natalie Leuzinger led Black Hawk with 19 points but battled foul trouble and ended the contest one shy of fouling out. Bailey Butler was two steals shy of a triple-double, finishing with eight steals, 10 assists and 16 points on 5 of 14 shooting. Hannah Butler had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Black Hawk, the top-ranked team in the state in Division 5 in both the WBCA and Associated press polls, shot 5 of 15 from beyond the arc and finished 8 for 10 from the free throw line. 


Albany 52, Highland 43

ALBANY — The Comets struggled from the free throw line but were still able to put away Highland in a nonconference game Jan. 25.

Brianna Dahl scored a game-high 20 points to lead Albany (11-5), with teammate Kristin O’Bel adding 16. The Comets were just 6 of 14 from the free throw line, including a 5 for 11 mark in the second half.

Rachel Miller led Highland (9-6) with 13 points.


Beloit Turner 59, Darlington 45

BELOIT — The Redbirds were left without a scorer in double digits in a nonconference loss Jan. 25.

Lizzie Schwartz and Taylor Wedig each had nine points to lead Darlington (7-6), while Brenna McDonald and Allison Thompson each added eight points.

Sabrina Fitzgerald and Olivia Tinder led Turner (10-5) with 18 points each.


Darlington 52, Iowa-Grant 45, OT

LIVINGSTON — On Jan. 23, Darlington needed overtime to fend off the Panthers in a SWAL contest. The Redbirds led by two at halftime, but Iowa-Grant tied it before the final horn. Darlington outscored Iowa-Grant 9-2 in overtime.

Thompson led the Redbirds (6-1 SWAL) with 14 points, while McDonald had nine. Schwartz, Maddie Crist and Laura Sturtz each added six. 

Olivia Liddicoat led Iowa-Grant (7-9, 2-6 SWAL) with 26 points.


New Glarus 66, Waterloo 54

WATERLOO — The Knights scored a Capitol South victory Jan. 23 thanks to a monster game from Jaylynn Benson, the team’s leading scorer this season.

Benson, a junior guard, put up 25 points for New Glarus (8-5, 2-2 Capitol South), which also got 14 points from Lily Himmelmann and seven each from Emma Marty and Shaelyn Klosterman-Havens.

Waterloo (8-6, 0-4) had four players in double figures, led by Skylar Powers’ 16.

The Knights led 33-29 at halftime.


Brodhead 62, Jefferson 46

BRODHEAD — Kiarra Moe scored 16 points as the Cardinals picked up a solid Rock Valley win Jan. 23.

Onnikah Oliver ended up with 15 points for Brodhead, while teammate Abbie Dix finished with 14 points. Carissa Purdue added eight. Ainsley Howard led the Eagles (6-7, 5-6 Rock Valley) with 12.

Brodhead (11-4, 7-4) led 29-20 at halftime.

In other area scores, on Jan. 24 Belmont defeated Pecatonica 51-38 and Monticello knocked off Benton 69-56.
