Warriors, Comets cruise; Redbirds rough up Miners

SOUTH WAYNE — Bailey Butler scored 24 points and Natalie Leuzinger added a double-double as the top-ranked Warriors cruised past Riverdale in a nonconference game Jan. 7.

Butler was 9 of 21 from the field and 5-for-11 on 3-pointers. She added seven rebounds, six assists and six steals. Leuzinger had 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Hannah Butler finished with 13 points, six steals and six assists and Kaylee Marty added seven points.

Black Hawk jumped out to a 26-9 lead at the half. The Warriors finished with just 10 turnovers but forced 21 steals and grabbed 39 rebounds in the contest.


Albany 66, Benton 38

ALBANY — The Comets picked up their 11th win of the season Jan. 7 with a win over the Zephyrs.

Albany (11-3) led 32-12 at halftime.

Sydney Mortaloni led the Comets with 20 points, while Libby Beck had 17, Brianna Dahl 9 and Kristin O’Bel 8. Mortaloni hit Albany’s only two 3-pointers in the game, while the Comets scored 26 times inside the arc and were 8 of 15 from the charity stripe.

Alexis Redfearn led Benton with 13 points, while Maggie Dougherty scored 11 and Sophie Dougherty had 10.

Darlington 61, Shullsburg 40

SHULLSBURG — Kaylee Meyers scored 18 points and Kathleen Mathias added 13 as the Redbirds knocked off the Miners in a nonconference game Jan. 8.

Darlington led by just four points at halftime but used a 37-20 run over the game’s final 18 minutes to seal the victory.

Ten Redbirds scored in the game. Shullsburg was led by Layla Alt’s 19 points.


New Glarus 65, Waterloo 51

NEW GLARUS — Jaylynn Benson scored 23 points to help the Knights snag their first conference win of the season in an upset of Waterloo.

Lexi Krause had 19 for New Glarus, which also received 11 from Lily Himmelmann.

The Knights led 36-33 at the half, but held the Pirates to just 18 points in the final 18 minutes.
