MOUNT HOREB — Monroe was knocked out of the WIAA Division 3 girls soccer tournament with an 8-0 mercy-rule loss to higher seed Mount Horeb on May 30. The Vikings had previously defeated the Cheesemakers 5-0 two weeks earlier in a nonconference game. Mount Horeb (12-4) would lose 3-2 in the regional final to Rock Valley champion Evansville (18-1)
The Vikings (12-4) wasted little time setting the tone, scoring just 2:29 into the game. By the 6:30 mark, Monroe trailed 2-0, and it was 7-0 at halftime. Mount Horeb even had a penalty kick goal disallowed because a player entered the 18-yard box a fraction of a second early.
Vikings captain Rowan Severson scored a hat trick in the first half with goals in the 7th, 26th and 34th minutes. The first goal came by dribbling through traffic in the box, the second on a long shot from 25 yards away and the third on a penalty kick.
The game ended when Gwen Motl scored on a penalty kick at 65:48 in the second half. It was her second goal of the game. Her first came in the 19th minute.
Monroe’s season ended with a 4-9-3 record overall, including a 3-5-1 mark in their first year in the Rock Valley. Seven of their usual 11 starters this season were seniors, including all-conference picks Kaelyn Welch (2nd Team) and Addison Bartholf (HM).
