MONTICELLO — Carolyn Schwartzlow has taken over as the volleyball coach of the Monticello Ponies in place of Alison Zimmerman and the Ponies responded with a 3-0 sweep 25-15, 25-5, 25-10 over the Juda Panthers in Six Rivers East conference volleyball on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
The first set was close in the early going as kills by Rianna Sullivan and Anna Bartels of Juda and a return error on Monticello kept the score close at 9-8 in favor of Monticello. Then, Braelynn Holz ripped off three straight aces followed by a service error on the Panthers to put Monticello up 14-11. The Ponies outscored the Panthers 11-4 the rest of the way to win set one 25-15.
The Ponies dominated set two as Audrianna Schraufnagel had three kills and an ace and Holz delivered an ace putting the Ponies ahead 20-3 on their way to a 25-5 win to take set two.
In set three, the Ponies blasted off to a 9-0 start as Kennadee Johnson had four aces and Holz had a kill before Juda got on the board with a block kill by Makenna Scheidegger and an ace by Bartels. Holz scored an ace and a block kill and Olson defended with a block kill to give the Ponies a 20-8 advantage. Johnson’s kill and a return error at the net by the Panthers gave the Ponies a 25-10 win in set three and take the match.


After the match, Schwartzlow was pleased to get the win and do it with a very young team. “We have a young team that played very well tonight. We had many, many aces,” noted Schwartzlow.
Monticello (2-6, 2-4) hosted Pecatonica while Juda (0-10, 0-3) hosted Albany on Sept. 25 in Six Rivers East conference action.
Southwestern 3, Darlington 1
HAZEL GREEN — The Southwestern Wildcats held off the Darlington Redbirds in four sets, 30-28, 25-22, 23-25, 27-25 in SWAL conference volleyball on Sept. 23.
Senior Maddie Gratz led the Redbirds with 13 kills. Junior Lilly Ritchie had five aces, 12 digs, and 24 assists. Junior Raynie Norgard also had four blocks for Darlington (6-11, 0-4).
The Redbirds hosted Riverdale in SWAL action on Sept. 25.
Cambridge 3, New Glarus 0
NEW GLARUS — The Cambridge Blue Jays defeated the New Glarus Glarner Knights in Capitol South volleyball in three sets, 25-16, 25-15, 25-25 on Sept. 23.
New Glarus fell to 5-14 overall, 1-5 in the Capitol South.
The Glarner Knights will be home to face Marshall on Sept. 30 in another Capitol South conference volleyball match.
In other area volleyball action on Sept. 23, Brodhead defeated Beloit Turner 3-1, Belleville fell to Marshall 3-1, Pecatonica swept Black Hawk 3-0, Monroe was blanked by Delavan-Darien 3-0, and Albany took one on the chin to Barneveld, 3-0.
