NEW GLARUS — The Sugar River Raiders are Capitol Conference boys soccer champions.

The Raiders clinched the title with a 4-0 win over the Lodi Blue Devils on Thursday, Oct. 9 on Senior Night. It is the eighth straight season Sugar River has won the Capitol Conference and the 10th time in the past 11 years.

The Raiders scored in the very first minute with junior Drew Brueggemann getting a goal from the left side and senior Tekeh Tazeh getting the assist.

Despite much of the first half being played on the Raiders side of the field the score remained 1-0 until halftime. Sugar River broke through with three goals in the second half.

Brueggemann got another goal at 44:56 on an assist by freshman Wyatt Coon to give Sugar River a 2-0 lead. Tazeh put the Raiders in front 3-0 on a goal at 59:52 with an assist from Brueggemann. At 65:24, the Raiders got a big push on the right side of the net. Tazeh got off a shot that was blocked, but got his own rebound and passed the ball to freshman Kaleb Weber who blasted it into the net.

It was the ninth shutout of the season for the Raiders as goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin had five saves in the win. Sugar River had 21 shots on goal.

For Sugar River coach Bob Gentilli, the conference title was something his team wanted, and earned it.

“The season was up and down, and we had injuries, but they persevered. We just found a way. Every game was different from the game before. So, winning it is pretty cool. I’m proud of these guys. They’re pretty resilient,” said Gentilli.

Sugar River (13-3-1, 6-1) has two matches remaining before the post-season begins. They play at Wisconsin Dells on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and host McFarland on Thursday, Oct. 16.
