Stoughton surges in 2nd period to topple Monroe

MONROE — Three goals in the second period pushed the Stoughton Vikings to a 6-2 win over the Monroe Cheesemakers in Badger Conference boys hockey on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The Cheesemakers got the first goal of the game as senior Brody Goode of Dakota, Ill. scored at 7:10 in the first period with assists by senior Hans Brandt and sophomore Blake Folgate. Stoughton scored a goal two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the first period.

The turning point was the second period as the Vikings scored three unanswered goals, the back-breaker was a goal with 29 seconds left in the period to put the Vikings ahead 4-1.

Stoughton scored another goal early in the third period to take a 5-1 lead. The Cheesemakers made it 5-2 when Goode scored again with Blake Folgate on the assist. The Vikings scored with under a minute and a half left to make it a 6-2 final.

Sophomore goalie Brogan Hoelscher of New Glarus made 22 saves for the Cheesemakers. Junior Duncan McInnis of Lena, Ill. made his Cheesemaker debut in goal for Monroe in the third period and made eight saves. Monroe had 50 shots on goal and went 0-1 on the power play.

Monroe (7-13, 4-7 Badger Conference) had another conference game scheduled on the road on Friday, Feb. 6 against the McFarland Spartans.


Girls Hockey

Bluebirds 2, Icebergs 1

STOUGHTON — The Janesville Bluebirds are undefeated in their last six games after downing the Stoughton Icebergs 2-1 in Badger Conference girls hockey on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

It’s the third straight win for the Bluebirds following a 1-1 tie with Coulee Region on Jan. 24. Against the Icebergs, all of the scoring took place in the first period. The Icebergs took a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. But, the Bluebirds tied it at 1-1 on a goal by Mya Roller at 8:59 and took the lead for good at 2-1 on Anna Cole’s goal at 16:20.

Micki Andrews and Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe both played but did not figure in the scoring. Only three penalties were called in the game. Janeville had 38 shots on goal. Goalie Jessie Demarasse had 26 saves for the Bluebirds.

Janesville (8-10-2, 6-4 Badger Conference) hosted the Viroqua Blackhawks in Badger Conference action scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 5.
