McFARLAND — The Monroe Cheesemakers could not find a solution for the McFarland Spartans in Badger Conference boys hockey on Friday, Feb. 6.
The Spartans blanked the Cheesemakers 5-0 to send Monroe to their second straight loss. It was the third time this season the Cheesemakers were shut out.
The Spartans scored at 7:56 in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The second period was a turning point as McFarland scored three unanswered goals to go up 4-0. McFarland scored another goal in the third period to make it a 5-0 final.
The Cheesemakers had 23 shots on goal and were 0-2 on the power play. Senior goalie Brock Brandli made 53 saves for Monroe.
On Saturday Feb. 6, the Cheesemakers played KMMO (Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc) in nonconference boys hockey and won 3-2 by scoring two goals in the third period.
KMMO scored the first goal of the game in the first period. The Cheesemakers tied it 1-1 on senior Brody Koehn’s power play goal, assisted by seniors Hans Brandt and Brody Goode at 2:45 in the second period. KMMO went ahead 2-1 less than two minutes later on a power play goal.
The game was tied again at 2-2 when Monroe scored at even strength on Koehn’s second goal assisted by senior Brody Goode at 8:21 in the third period. The Cheesemakers completed the comeback when senior Brady Stuart scored on a power play with assists going to Goode and senior Owen Hicks at 13:02 to get the win, 3-2.
The Cheesemakers had 33 shots on goal and were 2-3 on the power play. Brandli had an incredible 62 saves for Monroe.
Monroe has two more games left to play in the regular season. They were scheduled to play South Central in Badger Conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 and they close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Whitefish Bay in a nonconference game.
