MONTICELLO — You might be able to stop one of the three Olson sisters on the Albany-Monticello girls basketball team. But, you’ll have a tough time stopping all three, especially when they all score in double digits.
Freshman Annie Olson scored 14 points, sophomore Heidi Olson scored 11 points, and senior Molly Olson scored 10 points to lead the Space Stallions past the Barneveld Eagles 46-39 in Six Rivers East Conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
A tight first half saw AM tie the game at 6-6 on a basket by freshman Emerson Butts. Senior Hannah Esch of Barneveld hit a three with 8:04 left in the first half to give the Eagles a 16-13 lead. Sophomore Emma Thompson made two of four free throws, Annie Olson got free under the basket for a layup, and Molly Olson scored to put AM in front 22-18 with 2:00 left in the half. Neither team scored over the final 2:00, leaving the halftime score at 22-18.
The Space Stallions began the second half on a 10-4 run with Butts closing the run with a basket to give AM a 32-22 lead. After Molly Olson drained a three, the Space Stallions had a 35-27 lead with 10:51 left. Barneveld went on a run with a basket by Rowan Valcheff, a spinning layup by Izzy Durst and a basket and a free throw by Jayda Oimoen to make it a one-point game at 35-34 with 7:26 left. Barneveld looked to take the lead as Erin Lasse went to the free throw line with 6:59 remaining. But, Lasse missed both free throws and the Space Stallions maintained the lead the rest of the way.
Annie Olson provided AM with some breathing room with a three with 4:41 left to give the Space Stallions a seven-point lead at 41-34. Olson sealed it with a pair of free throws with under a minute to play to give AM a 10-point lead at 46-36.
Esch led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points. The Space Stallions did a great job on defense, limiting Durst, who averages nearly 20 points per game, to nine points.
Albany-Monticello coach Derik Doescher was happy to see his team have success on offense and defense against Barneveld.
“Coach (Jim) Myers of Barneveld, nobody teaches the match-up zone better than him. He’s a legend. He’s the best. We know that,” Doescher said. “We’ve played against his kids so hard because as soon as you run a man-to-man offense, they just trade you off for the next girl. So, at halftime, we just spread the floor, keep the ball in Heidi and Molly’s hands and make decisions and give them space to operate, and at times, it worked.”
Albany-Monticello (12-1, 5-1) was scheduled to host Highland at Monticello in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game on Friday, Jan. 16.
