BELLEVILLE — Callie Smith scored 20 points and pulled down 21 rebounds, leading Belleville to a no-doubt-about-it 55-29 victory over rival New Glarus Dec. 17.

Smith, one of the top players in the Capitol South, added six steals and four blocks. Overall, the Wildcats were simply too dominant on the glass, out-rebounding the Glarner Knights 51-20. The Wildcats also finished with 25 steals.

“They didn’t give and they worked hard, it just seemed like we couldn’t grab the ball when we needed to. You’re going to have nights like that,” said New Glarus coach Kevin Parman. “It doesn’t get any easier for us — we’ve got (second-ranked) Mineral Point next — so we’re about to see what we’re made of. We’ve got to shake this off, have a short memory and get after it.”

Mickey Stampl, Ava Foley and Alyssa Caskey all had seven boards for Belleville.

Stampfl added five assists, four steals, three blocks and 13 points, while Kenna Edge hit three 3-pointers for nine points. Belleville was 6 of 13 from beyond the arc as a team, while New Glarus was just 2-for-7.

Belleville used an 11-0 run over a five-minute stretch to go ahead 16-5 with 10:43 to play before halftime. At the break, the Wildcats were ahead 30-17, and the Knights were deep into their bench with foul trouble.

“It wasn’t a pretty first half, that’s for sure. We have to adjust, and we know that,” Parman said.

In the second half, the Wildcats went on another big run, scoring 10-straight to go ahead by 22, all but sealing the victory.

“(Belleville) did a good job. We just have to be more than one-dimensional now. We know that as a team. This showed us, and now we have a new focus,” Parman said.

Freshman Elle Lancaster led the Knights in scoring with eight points, while Alex Atwell and Ellie Eichelkraut each had six points. Leading scorer Lindsey Schadewalt entered the night averaging more than 23 points per game and scored just two points against Belleville on 1 of 7 shooting.

New Glarus opened the season winning five straight games, but have since lost back-to-back by double digits. After the Dec. 20 game against Mineral Point, the Knights will play two at the Dodgeville Tournament Dec. 27-28, then host Platteville Jan. 4.
