MONROE — In its final regular-season match, Monroe accomplished its preseason goal of a 10-win year with a 5-2 victory over Jefferson. The Cheesemakers finished 10-12 overall with a 3-3 record in the Rock Valley Conference.

“We set a team goal to reach 10 wins earlier in the season, and so picking that up on the last match was super rewarding for the girls,” Monroe head coach Matt Bordner said. “We’re in a nice position heading into the conference tourney on Tuesday and will have some opportunities to improve our conference standings.”

The win also came on Senior Night, where the team celebrated its 16 seniors. As if taken from a page in a play, senior Chyler Blackburn won her first varsity match at No. 3 doubles with partner Layla Pallesen.

Due to weather and last-minute rescheduling, the Cheesemakers travel to Lake Geneva on Wednesday, Sept. 27 for the singles portion of the Rock Valley Conference tournament. Freshman Ryann Dahlman finished the regular season 6-0 at No. 4 singles, earning a top seed in the conference tournament.

The doubles portion of the tournament also got pushed back. As of press time, it was yet to be determined if it would occur on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. However, Monroe’s No. 2 doubles pair, Delaney Fortney and Sydney Wunschel, likely got a high seed after going 4-2 on the season.

Results from the Rock Valley Conference tournament will still be published in the Saturday, Sept. 30 edition of the Monroe Times.

“We have a bunch of other girls that will be in the middle of the pack in their flights, as it is a crowded conference tournament with lots of girls at a similar skill level,” Bordner said. “It should make for an exciting end to the conference season.”
