Schuh, Menehan, Rufenacht begin 5-0

JANESVILLE — Monroe went 3-2 at the Cramer Brown Invitational on Dec. 2, finishing third as a team. Evansville was the winner, with Janesville Parker second.

The Cheesemakers won duals against Elkhorn (44-18), Kenosha Bradford (50-24) and Oregon (42-30). Monroe lost to Janesville Parker (41-34) and Evansville (56-22).

Carson Menehan (132), Christian Schuh (150) and Joe Rufenacht (165) all went unbeaten on the day for Monroe. Menehan pinned Evan Fahey of Oregon in the first period. Fahey was a WIAA Division 1 state qualifier last winter. Menehan also won a 12-2 major decision over Blake Frey of Evansville, a Division 2 state qualifier this past spring.

“Joe Rufenacht has really taken a big step forward compared to last year,” Monroe head coach Tom Witt said. “I expected Menehan and Schuh to be 5-0.”

Pieper Duals

STOUGHTON — Sugar River placed second as a team in the boys tournament, with Marshfield first and Stoughton second. The Raiders defeated Stoughton (42-40), Madison West (60-6), Grafton (60-18) and Dodgeville (48-33), but lost to Marshfield (51-25).

Mason Mau, Brennan Keyes and Carson Loshaw all went unbeaten on the day for Sugar River.

In the girls bracket, Sugar River’s Adalyn Danz Grass was second in the 139-146 bracket, pinning two opponents and finishing 2-1 on the day. Teammate Rosadella LaFrance was third in the 156-173 weight class. She was 2-1 on the day with a pin and lost in an 8-3 decision to Dodgeville’s Brielle Walmer.

Creek Classic

JOHNSON CREEK — Brodhead-Juda had two champions and three runners-up at the 2023 Creek Classic Dec. 2.

Marcus McIntyre (138) and Joe Lohmar (150) each went unbeaten to win their weight classes. McIntyre pinned all three of his opponents in under a minute each. Lohmar had three pins and won the championship with a 10-5 decision over Owen Knuth of Kettle Moraine.

Charlie Weis (175), Chase Wilhite (190) and Landon King (215) all finished second for the Cardinals, while Jacob Roth (113) and Emmitt Allen (285) were third.

Big Foot Invitational

WALWORTH — Parkview-Albany sent seven wrestlers to the Big Foot JV/Girls Invite on Dec. 2.

Senior Lexi Hanson went 2-1 on the day in the girls’ 114-pound bracket, earning a pin and a decision win. Junior Autumn Hill, also at 114, was 0-3. Junior Sydney Coyne, at 235 and in her first year on the Vikings, went 3-1 against the JV boys.

“Hanson worked hard against some tough girls,” Parkview-Albany coach Joel Steinmann said. “(Hill) got some great mat time and improved throughout the day. (Coyne) was willing to wrestle against the boys so she could get the mat time.”
