NEW GLARUS — The Knights had double the reason to celebrate, as junior Lindsey Schadewalt scored her 1,000th career point during New Glarus’ 63-47 win over Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Entering the game, Schadewalt knew she had to score at least 19 points to hit the milestone, but she didn’t let that psych her out.

“Once the jump ball went, all nerves were gone,” Schadewalt said. “It was another basketball game. It’s great to hit it [1,000 career points], but you have to play like you would normally to get here.”

New Glarus jumped to a 19-6 lead with aggressive plays. Grace Nommenson got the tip from Alex Atwell and scored. Minutes later, Nommenson drew a foul and converted at the free throw line. Elle Lancaster followed suit, going 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. In the stretch, Schadewalt scored 10 points with two 3-pointers.

The Knights then ran into some foul trouble, sending the Warriors to the line. In the first half, Ava Stein went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe for Lakeside. The Warriors were able to gain some momentum in the closing minutes of the first half with Stein’s free throws. Maria Riesen got Lakeside within eight as she drained a 3-pointer in transition, prompting a Knight timeout.

New Glarus padded its lead back to 10 points as Nommensen was fouled with three seconds left in the half. Her free throws ended a 7-0 run by the Warriors.

In the second half, Schadewalt drew closer and closer to 1,000 points with each shot. She had a bucket, went 2-for-2 from the free throw line and drained a three. Her mission didn’t blind her, though, as she still shared the ball with teammate Nommensen for another two points.

After an inbounds bucket from Riesen, Schadewalt made a fade-away shot for her 1,000th point, sending the gym into a frenzy. New Glarus fans waved signs in the air while the student section brought out a large poster. A time out was called for the team to celebrate, as Schadewalt was engulfed in hugs.

“It felt really good,” Schadwalt said. “Obviously, we have a great support system here, and there was a lot of people here. It was awesome to see everyone come out.”

She didn’t stop there, though, scoring seven more points including a deep 3-pointer.

Lakeside chipped away with free throws from Katie de Galley and Jenna Shadoski, but New Glarus’ lead was too great. With 2:34 left in the game, Warriors head coach Andy Asmus put all his substitutes in the game.

Off the Knight bench, Hailey Thompson drained a three to cap the game.

Schadewalt ended the game with 27 points, followed by Atwell with 12. Nommensen and Lancaster chipped in nine and eight points, respectively. Thompson, Payton Schneider and Bella Brenkman were the three other players to score.

New Glarus head coach Kevin Parman was happy to see that — in the middle of a career game for Schadewalt — other players were able to score, too.

“That’s one thing we focus on. Whoever has the best shot is the one we want to take it, no matter who it is,” Parman said. “I was glad to see Payton and Bella and the other girls look for their shot more. Grace, Lindsey and Alex are our three, but we need to get everybody involved especially if they are going to double Lindsey. The girls are continuing to get better at that.”

For Lakeside, Riesen and Stein finished in double figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively. The Warriors had six other players score.

New Glarus, ranked No. 8 in Divison 4,  has started its 2022-23 season 4-0 with an average margin of victory of 20 points. The Knights will travel to Brodhead on Saturday, Dec. 10. The last time the two teams met was the Division 4 regional final, where New Glarus won 61-47.
