MADISON — It took 30 years, but the Darlington Redbirds are state football champions once again. Darlington (14-0) defeated Edgar (13-1) in the WIAA Division 6 championship game 42-18 on Thursday, November 20 at Camp Randall Stadium.
The title is the fifth in program history, and the first since 1995. The Redbirds went four straight years as runners-up during the 2010s, and lost again on a last second field goal in 2023. Those frustrations from the Redbird Faithful were put at ease almost from the get-go. Darlington led 21-0 after the first quarter, and 35-6 at halftime.
The Redbirds out-gained Edgar in offensive yards 351-231. Darlington had 287 on the ground alone, including 133 yards on 12 carries from quarterback Zeke Zuberbuhler and 107 yards on 16 attempts from Calum Crist. Zuberbuhler had three touchdowns in the game, including a key 90-yard sprint in the second quarter. Dante Glendenning also had a rushing touchdown for the Redbirds, and senior Broker Buschor caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter.
