DARLINGTON — The Redbirds held their annual Ringen Invite Aug. 23 to honor former coach Gary Ringen. He began the boys golf program and coached numerous years for both boys’ and girls’ programs. Ringen passed away in 2014. His wife, Jill, is currently an assistant coach for the girls’ team.

“Gary was an avid golfer, and he coached boys and girls,” Jill said. “This is a really nice honor to have this in his name. I know he would love to see the girls out here. We couldn’t ask for a nicer day.”

Although Darlington finished seventh of seven teams, the Redbirds had a full varsity lineup for the second straight meet. After playing the first few invites of the season on JV, Anyka Johnson transitioned to varsity.

“We wanted to ease her into the varsity role. I know she wants to be part of it and she is very deserving of it. She’s earned that spot,” Darlington head coach Molly Rice said. “I think it will take off a little pressure, too. If someone has a bad day, someone else can step up. It’s a reassurance for everyone.”

Mount Horeb won the invite with a score of 380 and three golfers in the individual top 10 — Emma Olsen (91), Delaina Nicewander (95) and Lainy Hesseling (95). Brooklyn Bussan of Southwestern-Cuba City-Benton was the top golfer, carding an 87.

Makenna Martin and Elie Riechers led Darlington with scores of 124. The pair had one par and three bogeys between them.
