Redbirds capitalize on Cheesemaker turnovers

MONROE — Darlington scored 28 points off 26 turnovers against Monroe in a nonconference matchup on Nov. 21. The Redbirds more than doubled the Cheesemakers’ offensive output from 2- and 3-point range, winning 71-27.

Four players scored in double figures for Darlington (1-1, 0-0 SWAL) — Catie Hartwig (14 points), Lilly Ritchie (14), Sadie Goebel (14) and Lexie Meyers (12). The Redbirds shot 50% from beyond the arc, led by Meyers who was 4-for-4. Goebel also contributed with team highs in rebounds (7), assists (4), deflections (5) and steals (5). 

For Monroe (1-1, 0-0 Rock Valley Valley), Alexis Gertsch led the way with 10 points and nine rebounds. 


ALBANY-MONTICELLO 64, TURNER 24

BELOIT — Picking up right where they left off last season, the Space Stallions added another one to the win column against the Trojans on Nov. 22.

Dalana Trumpy was the leading scorer for Albany-Monticello (2-0, 0-0), tallying 20 points from eight field goals and one 3-pointer. Anna Ellinger and Molly Olson also finished in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively. 


BELLEVILLE 53, BARNEVELD 50

BARNEVELD — Nikole Schultz may have had only three points, but they were the most important of the game, as her buzzer-beater pushed the Wildcats over the Eagles in a nonconference game Nov. 21.

“A big shout out to Nikole, who struggled offensively but played really good defense on their best player,” Belleville head coach Eric Liegel said. “She stayed confident throughout and, when the ball found her in the corner at the end, she was able to knock down the buzzer-beater. I’m so happy for her. She put a ton of work in during the offseason.”

Toria DeVoe and Maddi DeSmet led Belleville (1-0, 0-0 Capitol South), scoring 19 and 17 points, respectively. Nine of DeVoe’s points came from beyond the arc, while DeSmet was 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.


JUDA 36, 

JOHNSON CREEK 23

JOHNSON CREEK — The Panthers didn’t earn their first win until the end of January in 2023-24, but Juda got off to a quick start this season with a nonconference win over the Bluejays on Nov. 22.

Juda (1-1, 0-0 Six Rivers East) limited Johnson Creek to just eight points in the first half and six field goals all game. Meanwhile, Phoenix Homan and Rianna Sullivan scored 10 points each for the Panther offense.
