NEW GLARUS — The Sugar River Raiders finished their regular season with a 3-0 nonconference win over McFarland on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Just when it looked like it would be a scoreless tie at halftime, the Raiders broke through with a goal by Drew Brueggemann, assisted by Tikeh Tazeh, at 38:24 to put Sugar River ahead 1-0.
The Raiders scored two quick goals to begin the second half. Brueggemann got an unassisted goal at 43:17. The Raiders struck again at 49:11 on Owen Griffin’s goal with Brueggemann assisting to make it 3-0.
Sugar River had 15 shots on goal while McFarland had 17. Taydon DeRouin had 12 saves for the Raiders. Sugar River, the Capitol Conference champions (6-1), closed the regular season 14-3-1.
Sugar River coach Bob Gentilli said he likes his team not letting up on the gas.
“Last night when we came to practice, the boys were all ready to go. We had fun, we played together. We knew it was McFarland. The moment they stepped on the field, they were ready to play,” said Gentilli.
The Raiders earned the No. 3 seed and will host No. 14 seed Prairie du Chien in a Division 3 regional semifinal on Thursday, Oct. 23 at New Glarus.
Cambridge-Deerfield 1, Monroe 0
MONROE — In the final home game of the season, the Cheesemakers fell in a tight one-score affair. Monroe finished the regular season in fifth place in the Rock Valley Conference, with a league mark of 3-3-1, and an overall record of 6-12-2. Monroe faces Platteville-Lancaster in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal Oct. 23.
