NEW GLARUS — The Raiders took over full control of the Capitol Conference with a 4-1 victory over Lodi Oct. 3. Both teams entered the game tied for first.
Sugar River jumped out to an early lead as Breckin Faber scored off a pass from Tyler Lueschow just 1:47 into the game. In the 15th minute Ryan Downing scored off a pass from Carter Siegenthaler to make it 2-0, and the Raiders went up 3-0 less than two minutes later when Ben Lukszys found Charlie Douma for an open shot.
During the second half, Siegenthaler added a goal of his own late in the 70th minute. Lodi’s lone goal came in the 82nd minute against Sugar River backup keeper Cameron Kleighbor. Kleighbor finished with two saves and starter Julian Lutz had three saves. Sugar River outshot Lodi 9-5.
The Raiders (10-5, 6-0 Capitol) are now a full three points up on Lodi (7-5-1, 5-2) in the league table (18-15). Wisconsin Heights (5-4-1, 4-2) and Lake Mills (9-6-2, 4-2) are tied for third with 12 points.
Sugar River was set to host Wisconsin Heights Oct. 8 and finishes off its conference schedule with games against Cambridge-Deerfield (6-5-2, 3-3) Oct. 14 and Lakeside Lutheran (1-12-0, 0-6) Oct. 15. The regular season comes to a close for the Raiders Oct. 17 with a nonconference game against Madison Edgewood (5-8).
River Valley 2, Monroe 1
SPRING GREEN — The Cheesemakers lost in a nonconference game against River Valley Oct. 3 thanks to a pair of late second half goals from the home team.
Monroe (1-9-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute on a goal by senior Heath Bear. River Valley scored the equalizer in the 78th minute, then capped the comeback on a goal with just 26 seconds remaining in the game.
Julio Vasquez started in net for Monroe and had one save in 45 minutes. Aidan Lambert took over in the second half and made six saves but allowed both goals. The Cheesemakers had eight shots in the contest.
Sauk Prairie 6, Monroe 0
PRAIRIE DU SAC — The host Eagles showed little mercy to the one-win Cheesemakers in a Badger Conference crossover game Oct. 5.
Sauk Prairie, ranked No. 8 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, scored five goals in the first half to put Monroe on its heels. The Eagles scored the opening goal in the seventh minute and went up 2-0 in the 27th minute. Three more goals over the next 13 minutes put the Cheesemakers in a hole too big to crawl out of.
The last goal for Sauk Prairie came in the 65th minute.
Vasquez played the entire game in net and made 10 saves. The Cheesemakers countered the Eagles attack with just three shots on goal.
Monroe was scheduled to play at Stoughton Oct. 7 and then host Watertown Oct. 8 at T.R. Holyoke Field. A nonconference game at East Troy-Palmyra Eagle is set for Oct. 10 with a home game at Honey Creek Park penciled to be played against Jefferson the next day, Oct. 11.
