Raiders clinch Capitol title

BELLEVILLE — The Sugar River Raiders earned yet another conference championship — it’s fifth straight — with back-to-back wins over Columbus and Lodi May 16-17. The victory over Lodi clinched the title, as the Blue Devils entered the in second place in the Capitol Conference standings.

The Raiders have four games remaining in the regular season, with the lone league game May 24 against Watertown Luther Prep, with the other three nonconference: Madison Country Day (May 19), Mount Horeb (May 21), and Evansville (May 27).

On May 16, the Raiders beat Columbus at home 5-0. Lainey Winkers, Jenna Gentilli, Haley Thompson, Libby Maclean and Anya Brenkman all scored for Sugar River, with Gentilli, Maclean, Lily Maynard, Tenley Faber and Audry Brueggemann adding assists. Sugar River’s defense did not allow a shot on goal.

Against Lodi, the Raiders scored the game’s only goal just minutes into the contest. Thompson scored off an assist from Riley O’Flanagan at the 4:30 mark in the first half. Sugar River outshot Lodi 14-3.


Baraboo 4, Monroe 1

MONROE — The Cheesemakers had multiple prime scoring opportunities against the Thunderbirds that could have changed the complexion of the game, but instead the shots went wide of the net. In the end, Baraboo scored on two penalty kicks to drop Monroe to 1-11-1 on the season.

Monroe trailed 2-0 at halftime and fell behind 4-0 in the second half. In the final two minutes, freshman forward Violet Lewis scored to put Monroe on the board. Baraboo’s Caitlyn Frank had a hat trick with three goals. 

The Cheesemakers were set to host Monona Grove on May 19, with a make-up game at top-ranked Oregon May 20. On May 24, Monroe will face Portage-Poynette in the regular season finale. The Cheesemakers beat Portage-Poynette 2-1 to open the regular season on April 5.
