NEW GLARUS — The Sugar River Raiders used a pair of goals and stellar defense to get a 2-0 win over Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld in Capitol Conference boys soccer on Thursday, Sept. 18.
After a 0-0 tie at halftime, the Raiders got an unassisted goal by Drew Brueggeman at 49:50 to take a 1-0 lead. About five minutes later, the Raiders increased the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Wyatt Coon assisted by Owen Griffin and Brueggemann. The Raiders’ defense did the rest in getting Sugar River their seventh shutout of the season.
Sugar River (9-1-1, 3-0) will play at Lake Mills on Thursday, Sept. 25 in a Capitol Conference game.
Cheesemakers go 1-2 at Kiel Tournament
KIEL — The Monroe Cheesemakers played three games at the Kiel Tournament on Saturday Sept. 20 and went 1-2, getting a win over Denmark 1-0. Reese McIntosh scored the lone goal on an assist by Brock Brandli in the first half. Barrett Brandli stopped two shots on goal by Denmark in getting the shutout win.
Monroe then faced Manitowoc Roncalli but lost 1-0. Barrett Brandli had seven saves including a penalty kick save for the Cheesemakers.
Next the Cheesemakers met the Lakeside Lutheran Warriors. Again, the Cheesemakers lost 1-0, as Barrett Brandli recorded five saves.
Monroe (5-4-1, 2-0) hosted Big Foot in Rock Valley Conference action on Monday. The Cheesemakers will play at Delavan-Darien on Thursday, Sept. 25 in another RVC match.
