Ponies stay unbeaten in conference; Pec edges Black Hawk in 5 sets

JUDA — The Monticello Ponies (21-1, 11-0 Six Rivers East) remained undefeated in conference play with a sweep of the Juda Panthers (2-13, 1-9) on Thursday, Oct. 6. Monticello cruised to victory 25-11, 25-9, 25-11.

For Juda, Briliey Swedlund and Grace Gold served up two aces each. Lavinia Rufer led with three kills, and Ciarrah Davis dug out five balls. 

Monticello finishes its regular season with a game against Black Hawk (6-10, 6-4) on Oct. 11 while Juda travels to Pecatonica (7-5, 6-3) on Thursday, Oct. 13.


PECATONICA 3, BLACK HAWK 2

SOUTH WAYNE — In a battle for third in the Six Rivers East Conference, the Pecatonica Vikings (7-5, 6-3) edged the Black Hawk Warriors in five sets. 

The Vikings won the first set 25-19 before the Warriors responded by winning the next two sets 25-21 and 25-17. 

With the game on the line, Pecatonica won set four 25-19 to force a fifth set. In a first-to-15 battle, the Vikings prevailed 15-9.

Tara Wellnitz led in both kills (12) and digs (14). Ellie Edler set up her teammates with 22 kills. Raylin Peterson defended the net with three blocks, while Mallorie Peterson served up three aces.

Black Hawk honored its six seniors: Wellnitz, Edler, Jenna Meier, Kaylee Brooker and both Petersons.

The Warriors travel to Monticello (21-1, 11-0) on Oct. 11 for a game with the Six Rivers East champion, while Pecatonica gets to prove itself against Barneveld (10-7, 7-3). 


BARNEVELD 3, ALBANY 0

BARNEVELD — The Barneveld Eagles (10-7, 7-3) swept the Albany Comets (2-12, 2-7) on Thursday, Oct. 6. With the win, the Eagles kept pace for second place in the Six Rivers East, as Pecatonica (7-5, 6-3) also won their match.

Barneveld and Pecatonica meet in Pecatonica on Tuesday, Oct. 11. With a win, the Eagles would solidify their second-place finish in the conference. If Pecatonica wins, the two teams would each have seven conference wins. 

Albany will host Argyle (1-14, 1-8) on Tuesday, Oct. 11. 


MOUNT HOREB 3, MONROE 0

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers (1-14, 0-7 Badger West) fell to the Mount Horeb Vikings (21-9, 5-2) on Dig Pink Night, Thursday, Oct. 6.

On Saturday, Oct. 8 the Cheesemakers traveled to Mount Horeb for the Badger West tournament. They played Baraboo (13-32, 4-6) and Reedsburg (12-16, 3-6), falling in both games two sets to none.

Monroe ends the regular season with a series of non-conference games, beginning with a trip to Clinton (4-18, 1-8 Rock Valley) on Oct. 10.
