NEW GLARUS — Sophomore Annabelle Curl came off the bench and scored 10 points to lead the New Glarus Glarner Knights (No. 6 seed) past the Dodgeville Dodgers (No. 11 seed) 47-35 in a Division 3 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Curl came into the game just past the midway point of the first half and made her presence felt. With the Knights leading 15-11, Curl drained a long two-point shot that gave New Glarus a 17-11 lead. With 26 seconds left in the half, Curl converted a three-point play to extend the Knights’ lead to 20-12. Dodgeville’s Marlie McGraw made a basket at the buzzer and New Glarus led at halftime, 20-14.
In the second half, Curl made a sweeping layup moving from her right to her left to put NG ahead 25-21. Curl got a putback and made one of two free throws to help New Glarus take a 28-24 lead with 10:30 to go.
Junior Kate Parman helped the Knights take a 38-27 lead with under seven minutes to play as she scored a basket, scored on a putback, and made a layup on a perfectly executed give-and-go.
New Glarus sealed the win with under two minutes to play as junior Marie Besley got a steal and a layup followed by junior Ellie Brenkman’s two free throws to make it a 47-30 lead for New Glarus.
In addition to Curl’s 10 points, New Glarus got nine points each from Kate Parman and freshman Ellie Parman. McGraw led Dodgeville with 11 points.
New Glarus coach Kevin Parman said things began to click for Annabelle Curl when she put to use some advice from him.
“We talked to her and I said, ‘show the ball fake and if you’re going downhill with your left hand, get all the way to the rim’ and she was able to do that a couple of times so, good for her, she stepped up and that’s great for her and everybody else,” Parman said.
With the win, New Glarus improved to 14-11 overall and advanced to the Division 3 regional semifinal on Friday, Feb. 27 on the road against No. 3 seed Platteville (19-5).
