Pecatonica Vikings maintain slim lead for second
volleyball stock

BLANCHARDVILLE — With its 25-18, 25-10, 25-11 sweep of Juda (0-9) on Oct. 8, Pecatonica (7-3) maintains a half game lead over Argyle (6-3) and Monticello (6-3) for second place in the Six Rivers East.

“Our girls started a bit slow but still came out with the win,” Pecatonica head coach Melissa Schlimgen said. “I’m proud of our girls for a good home-court victory.”

Tatum Kurschner led the team in both assists (20) and aces (4). Loretta Tisch led the offensive attack with 13 of the team’s 31 kills. Aleah Harris and Kurschner chipped in six and five kills, respectively.


BARNEVELD 3, ARGYLE 1

ARGYLE — The Orioles pushed the Division 5 honorable mention Eagles to four sets — with two of them going to extra points — in a Six Rivers East loss on Oct. 8. Barneveld prevailed 25-19, 26-24, 23-25, 27-25.

Claire Holmes got it started with six aces, while Brooke Wellnitz was perfect from the line in 16 attempts. Wellnitz and Kylie Butler paced the offense with 38 combined kills. They were two of three players with a positive hitting percentage, including Lexi Wonders. Wellnitz was also a large presence at the net with five blocks. Mya McNett distributed the offense with 30 assists. All but two players had double-digit kills, led by McNett.


DELAVAN-DARIEN 3, MONROE 0

DELAVAN — With a hitting percentage nearly .300 below their opponents, the Cheesemakers suffered a 25-22, 25-7, 25-15 loss to the Comets on Oct. 8.

Olivia Feller led the offense with five kills, followed by Riley Nicholson and Avery Kaiser with four each. Mya Wild distributed the offense with 13 of the team’s 19 assists. Sophie Golembiewski was a large presence at the net with two blocks, and Alexis Herbst tallied nine digs. 


DARLINGTON 3, FENNIMORE 1

FENNIMORE —  After dropping the first set 25-20, the Redbirds rallied to win the next three games 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 to defeat the Eagles in a SWAL matchup Oct. 8.

Five different players combined for 15 aces, led by Maddie Gratz with four. She also led the team with 17 kills, hitting at a .273 clip. Darlington tallied six solo blocks, led by Kaycee Wedig and Raynie Norgard with two each. Allie Andrews dished out 26 assists, and Lilly Ritchie paced the team with 19 digs.


BELLEVILLE 3, 

CAMBRIDGE 0

CAMBRIDGE — With a 25-23, 25-9, 25-22 sweep of the Bluejays on Oct. 8, the Wildcats moved into a tie for second place in the Capitol South Conference. Belleville (6-2) and Cambridge (6-2) are just a game behind league leader, Marshall (7-1). The Wildcats have two more conference games left against New Glarus (3-5) and Waterloo (1-7).

In other local volleyball, Albany earned a revenge 3-0 win over Black Hawk. The Comets previously lost to the Warriors 3-2 on Sept. 12. Brodhead fell to league-leading Edgerton 3-1.
