BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings pounded out 22 hits and took advantage of nine Monticello-Albany errors in a 29-0 victory June 1. The next night, Pecatonica lost to Mount Horeb 13-3.
In the win over M/A, Dakota Doescher, Bryce Johnsrud and Tyler McKeon each had four hits for Pec, while Kegun Brunker, Elijah Knutson and Levi Paust had two hits. McKeon was a home run shy of the cycle, had four hits in the 9-hole and drove in seven runs. Doescher drove in four runs. Paust hit two doubles, while Brunker and Knutson also doubled.
Coy Ruegsegger gave up a hit and struck out two in two innings of work on the mound. Devon Doran struck out three with two hits in three innings. The pair of Pecatonica pitchers totaled just 57 pitches (43 strikes) in five innings.
Monticello-Albany used five different pitchers — Tyler Anderson, Andy Gertsch, Carson Gafner, Rob Schroeder and Brayden Bakken.
Pecatonica scored 12 in the first, three in the second, 11 in the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the loss to Mount Horeb, Hunter Enloe had three hits for Pecatonica, including a double. Knutson took the loss on the mound, giving up two runs in two innings on a pitch count. Ruegsegger, McKeon and Jameson Johnson pitched in relief, none throwing more than 37 pitches.
Mount Horeb struck gold in the third inning, plating eight runs that separated the two teams.
New Glarus 4, Waterloo 0
NEW GLARUS — Leyton Mihlbauer and Darris Schuett each had two hits and Brennan Butler drove in a pair as the Glarner Knights picked up a key late-season victory against Waterloo June 1. Mihlbauer and Schuett also stole two bases each.
In the bottom of the third, Mihlbauer walked and immediately stole second. With two outs, Schuett drove a base hit up the middle to centerfield, and Mihlbauer came around to score the first run of the game. The Knights added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kylo Barker scattered four hits and a walk on the mound for New Glarus. He struck out five and tossed an efficient 82 pitches in seven innings.
Brodhead-Juda 5, Big Foot 4
BRODHEAD — Cade Walker hit a walk-off single, driving in Brady Malkow in the bottom of the seventh June 1 as the Cardinals scored a major late-season Rock Valley victory.
Tied at 4-4 entering the final frame, Malkow doubled on a 1-1 count. On the very next pitch, Walker sent a base hit into left field to end the game.
Brodhead led 3-0 through five innings, but Big Foot scored four runs in the top of the sixth to briefly take a 4-3 lead. Aidyn Vondra drove in Ryan Searls with two outs in the sixth to even the score.
Brodhead-Juda outhit Big Foot 10-5. Connor Green had three hits and a walk, while Walker was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Vondra also had two hits.
Malkow pitched the first 5.2 innings for the Cardinals, going scoreless through five before running into trouble in the sixth. He finished the day with eight strikeouts, four hits, four walks and four runs (three earned). He also hit a batter, throw a wild pitch and balked. Kohen Sawle came on in relief to get Brodhead-Juda out of the inning, and Walker pitched a scoreless seventh.
Iowa Grant 16, Argyle 11
ARGYLE — The Orioles gave up nine runs in the top of the first inning and played catchup all game after. In the bottom half of the inning, Argyle scored five runs, but would never get to within four runs again.
Jayden Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Brady Penniston was 2-for-5, while Clay Ritschard had a hit, two walks, three runs and three steals. Penniston tripled while Johnson doubled.
Max Godfrey allowed five runs in just 2/3 of an inning to start, and Johnson labored in relief before getting out of the first inning. Penniston went 3/1 innings, allowing six runs — though just one was earned. Buddy Gerber pitched the final 2.2 innings for Argyle.
Mineral Point 25, Darlington 7
Riverdale 12, Darlington 3
DARLINGTON — The Redbirds let a SWAL game against Riverdale slip away in the late innings June 1, only to see the state’s top-ranked team score seemingly at will the next night.
Against Riverdale, Darlington trailed 3-2 entering the fourth inning. That’s when Riverdale scored four runs. The Redbirds got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but Riverdale added three more in the sixth and two in the seventh to close out the game.
Gage Banfield took the loss on the hill for Darlington, allowing four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings of work. Reagan Jackson gave up eight runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings of relief.
Breylin Goebel and Hunter Hardyman each doubled, singled and drew a walk for the Redbirds.
Against top-ranked Mineral Point June 2, the Redbirds fell behind 4-1 after the first inning, and were down 10-1 through three. A 10-run fourth inning made it 20-1 in favor of the Pointers, who added five more runs in the top of the fifth.
Darlington scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the deficit was simply too much to handle. Five of the Redbirds’ six hits, including a double by Goebel, came in the final inning.
Cayden Rankin took the loss on the mound, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) in 2.1 innings of work. Goebel got Darlington out of the third inning. Hardyman then allowed four runs in 1/3 of an inning pitching in the fourth. Cayden Burbach then tossed 1.1 innings of relief, allowing 11 runs (six earned). Tye Crist closed out the top of the fifth inning with a strikeout in just 1/3 of an inning.
