New Glarus hosts track meet for first time in 37 years

NEW GLARUS — With New Glarus splitting from its long-time track and field co-op with Belleville, the Glarner Knights and the Wildcats have their own track programs. With that, on Tuesday, April 7, New Glarus hosted a track meet for the first time since 1989 with a triangular featuring friendly neighbors Belleville and Monticello.

New Glarus boys won the triangular with 113 points, followed by Belleville with 56 points, and Monticello with three points. In girls, New Glarus was the winner with 89 points. Belleville followed with 45 points, and Monticello 12.

In the boys results, the 100 meter dash was won by Jesse Luchsinger of Belleville with a time of 11.99 seconds. Luchsinger also won the 200 meter dash in 24.95 seconds. The boys 400 meter dash went to Wyatt Gehin of Belleville in 59.44 seconds. The 800 meter run belonged to Carson Biermeier of Belleville with a time of 2:22.12. The 1,600 meter run was captured by Benjamin Biank of New Glarus in 5:11.00. Biank was also the winner of the 3,200 meter run as he circled the track in 11:59.60. The 110 meter hurdles went to Kaden Dammen in 21.26 seconds, and Dammen also took the 300 meter hurdles in 51:30 seconds.

The Glarner Knights won the 4x100 meter relay as the team of Sawyer O’Flanagan, Ethan Seffrood, Tucker Sysko, and Milo Johnson was timed at 46.82 seconds. New Glarus also succeeded in taking the 4x200 meter relay as Isaac Christiansen, Jaiden Sidwell, Sysko, and O’Flanagan had a time of 1:37.99. The Knights were winners of the 4x400 meter relay with Sidwell, Ashton Leppien, Tikeh Tazeh, and Brayden Schmitt completing the relay in 9:40.16. New Glarus also won the 4x800 meter relay with Dylan Gardner, Biank, Edward Blumer, and Finian Hoeper running the relay in 9:40.16.

In the field events, Sysko topped the field in the high jump as he cleared 5-feet, 10-inches. Schmitt took the pole vault (10-6). Ethan Seffrood of New Glarus was first in the long jump with a jump of 18-feet, 9-inches. Sidwell won the triple jump (36-9). The shot put went to junior Brent Weeden of New Glarus (51-3.5). In second was junior Broderick Gobel of Belleville (41-2.75). Weeden and Gobel also went one-two in the discus throw. Weeden won the event (143-10) ahead of Gobel (109-3).

In the girls portion of the meet, Gracie Atkinson of New Glarus won the 100 meter dash (13.83 seconds) and the 200 meter dash (29.20). The 400 meter dash was won by Ellie Gehin of Belleville (1:09.26). Olivia Fox, Belleville, claimed the 800 meter run (2:55.31) and the 1,600 meter run (6:23.15). Marielle Smith, Monticello, was the winner of the 3,200 meter run. Marie Besley, New Glarus, won the 100 meter hurdles (19.01). Clara Winden, New Glarus, won the 300 meter hurdles (55.27).

New Glarus swept the relays. The 4x100 team of Atkinson, Kalia Malaise, Marie Besley, and Vivian Lancaster had a time of 52.75 seconds. The 4x200 went to Adelyn Sarbacker, Kennedy Sysko, Malaise, and Lancaster in 1:55.43.

Annabelle Curl of New Glarus won the high jump (5-0). Kennadee Johnson, Monticello, took second (4-8). Besley was first in the pole vault (7-0). Atkinson captured the long jump (17-3.5). Junior Reese Speth, New Glarus, won the shot put (33-1.5) and the discus (106-8).
