ARGYLE — The Iowa-Grant Panthers built up a 25 point halftime lead on their way to a 72-43 win over the Argyle Orioles in nonconference boys basketball on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
Iowa-Grant got an early nine point lead before senior Jeremiah Collins got a reverse layup to pull the Orioles to within seven points at 14-7 with 10:20 to go in the first half. But, I-G went on an 18-5 run to take a 32-12 lead with 5:30 remaining in the half. Junior Wyatt Peterson made two free throws to close the scoring in the first half, but the Orioles trailed 43-18 at halftime.
Junior Mikey Helfvogt got a dunk and was fouled and converted a three- point play with 12:40 left in the game, but Argyle still trailed 48-27. The Panthers increased their lead to 37 points as I-G’s Everett Zimmer scored a couple of baskets and a couple of free throws along with a layup by Noah Lange to take a 72-35 lead late in the game.
Helfvogt was the only scorer in double figures for the Orioles with 13 points. Senior Deacon Kuebli scored seven points for Argyle. Zimmer led Iowa-Grant with 21 points.
Argyle (2-2, 1-0) returned to Six Rivers East Conference action against Albany on Thursday, Dec. 18.
New Glarus 77, Mineral Point 64
MINERAL POINT — The New Glarus Glarner Knights found themselves down 39-33 at halftime to the Mineral Pointers, but used 44 second half points to upend the Pointers 77-64 in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Dec. 15.
Junior Nolan Julseth led the Knights with 26 points, junior Bubba Weeden scored all 11 of his points in the second half, and senior Matt Roth added 10 points in the Knights’ comeback win. New Glarus allowed the Pointers just 25 points in the second half and Mineral Point shot just 4-25 from three point range for the game. Senior Keaton Dempsey led Mineral Point with 28 points.
New Glarus (3-1) will play Lakeside Lutheran on the road in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Friday, Dec. 19.
Southwestern 81, Black Hawk 29
SOUTH WAYNE — The Southwestern Wildcats, who had averaged 85 points per game in their first three games, continued with their high-scoring attack with an 81-29 win over the Black Hawk Warriors in nonconference boys basketball on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
Mineral Point slowed down the Wildcats with a 47-45 win on Dec. 12, but Southwestern found their high-octane offense against the Warriors by taking a 48-21 halftime lead. The Warriors scored only eight points in the second half.
Senior Jacob Woodruff led the Warriors with 12 points, including 6-7 from the free throw line and 10 rebounds. Junior Brody Argall scored five points for the Warriors.
Black Hawk (0-4, 0-2) was scheduled to get back into Six Rivers East Conference action with a game against Juda on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Clinton 88, Brodhead 74
BRODHEAD — The Clinton Cougars made 13-27 three pointers (48%) and defeated the Brodhead Cardinals 88-74 in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division action on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
It was a season-high for points in a game for the Cardinals, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the Cougars. Senior Sam Searls led the Cardinals with 26 points. Senior Nolan Bump had 18 points, and junior Dylan Ross scored 11 points for the Cardinals.
Brodhead dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the RVC-Rock. Brodhead is scheduled to face Turner in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division action at Beloit on Friday, Dec. 19.
