No. 1 Orioles win 15th straight

SOUTH WAYNE — The Argyle Orioles won their 15th straight volleyball match to start the season with a three-set sweep (25-11, 25-13, 25-18) over the Black Hawk Warriors in Six Rivers East Conference play on Sept. 25.

Argyle, ranked No. 1 in the latest Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, was led by senior Kylie Butler with 15 kills, 16 digs and an ace. Junior Brooke Wellnitz rolled up 13 kills, eight digs, four blocks and three aces. Junior Avari Steiner racked up 29 assists, four digs, an ace and a block. Sophomore Claire Holmes tallied two kills, two aces, two blocks and four digs.

For the Warriors, senior Mya Milz led the way with six kills. Junior Jaci Kammes distributed seven assists and delivered three aces. Senior Keirra Brunner added eight digs.

Argyle (15-0, 7-0 Six Rivers East) played in the Shullsburg Tournament on Sept. 27 before facing off against Barneveld on Sept. 29.

Black Hawk (0-11, 0-4) was scheduled to play at Albany on Sept. 29 in another Six Rivers East match.


Brodhead wins twice

BRODHEAD — The Brodhead Cardinals picked up two wins over RVC-Rock opponents last week. 

First, the Cardinals defeated Turner at Beloit on Sept. 23 in four sets, 15-25, 25-21, 25-10, 25-17. Senior Brynn Riesterer blasted 13 kills and added four blocks. Freshman Ella Olson also had eight kills. Senior Gretchen Kammerer provided 27 assists. Senior Addie Leifker had 23 digs while senior Alecia Dahl chipped in with 18 digs. Junior Karli Krumwiede delivered five aces and freshman Sadie Woelky had two aces in the win for the Cardinals.

Next, Brodhead hosted Evansville on Sept. 25 and won in a three set sweep, 25-19, 25-11, 25-12. Riesterer tallied seven kills and three blocks. Kammerer contributed 21 assists and Leifker notched 10 digs. Karli Krumweide and Woelky led the Cardinals in aces with four. 

With the wins, Brodhead is 19-7 overall and 4-1 in the RVC-Rock. Brodhead hosted Clinton on Sept. 30.


Darlington 3, Riverdale 1

DARLINGTON — The Darlington Redbirds topped the Riverdale Chieftains in four sets, 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-15 on Sept. 25. For the Redbirds, it was their first SWAL conference win this season.

Darlington was led by junior Lilly Ritchie who had 11 kills and 18 assists. Senior Maddie Gratz, senior Catie Hartwig, and senior Sydney Wiegel each had four blocks. Hartwig totaled 14 digs and Gratz added four aces.

Darlington (7-11, 1-4) next plays at River Valley Oct. 6.

In other area volleyball action, Monroe lost to conference-leading Jefferson at home on Sept. 25 in four sets, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-25.
