No. 1 Orioles sweep No. 5 Barneveld

ARGYLE — The Argyle Orioles left no doubt who is the top team in girls volleyball in the Six Rivers East. 

The Orioles swept past the Barneveld Eagles in three sets (25-15, 25-10, 25-17) in Six Rivers East volleyball on Monday, Sept. 29. The Orioles, ranked No. 1 in the latest Division 5 Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association poll never trailed in their match against the No. 5 ranked Eagles. Argyle (19-1, 6-0) is perfect through the first half of the Six Rivers East Conference schedule.

In the first set, the Orioles called a time out when Barneveld closed to within 10-9. The Orioles pulled away when the Eagles had a kill attempt sail out of bounds to go up 14-9. That was followed by an underhand scoop kill by Kaylie Butler to increase the lead to 15-9. Butler had a thunderous kill to give the Orioles a 19-13 lead, then Brynn Harris delivered four consecutive aces to close out set one 25-14.

Set two belonged to the Orioles from start to finish. A right side kill by Butler put Argyle up 8-6 which was followed up by a kill from Brooke Wellnitz to give the Orioles an 11-8 edge. A sideways kill along the net by Butler put Argyle in front 15-10, and from there Argyle outscored Barneveld 10-0 to take set two 25-10.

Set three saw Argyle jump out to a 6-1 lead with Butler getting a kill on a pop-up that landed just inside the line and a kill by Lexi Wonders. Holmes and Wellnitz each got a kill to give the Orioles a 10-6 lead. Avari Steiner’s kill gave the Orioles a 19-15 advantage. An ace by Harris and a pair of kills by Wellnitz put Argyle in the driver’s seat with a 24-16 lead. A return error on Barneveld gave the set and the match to Argyle 25-17.

Argyle coach Jen Green said her team played a great match from beginning to end. “They worked really hard and put it all together. It was a team effort. I love the hustle and the savviness. It was fun to watch tonight,” stated Green.


Shullsburg Tournament recap: Argyle wins pool, falls in gold bracket

SHULLSBURG — The Argyle Orioles competed in the Shullsburg Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27 where they won all three of their pool play matches but lost in the gold bracket to Wisconsin Heights.

The Orioles defeated Fennimore 25-16, 27-26, Parkview 25-9, 25-20, and Burlington Catholic Central 25-22, 25-12 to reach the gold bracket, but lost to Wisconsin Heights in three sets, 25-16, 21-25, 13-15. It was the first loss of the season for the Orioles.

In overall individual results, Kylie Butler had 49 kills, 32 digs, three blocks, and three aces. Brooke Wellnitz totaled 33 kill, 37 digs, seven blocks, and five aces. Avari Steiner compiled 85 assists, 21 digs, two blocks, three aces, and one kill.

Other highlights from the Shullsburg Tournament include Claire Holmes with 16 kills, Brynn Harris with 38 digs, Elise Kuebli had 16 digs, and Brinley Meinert with two kills and two blocks. 

Monticello finished fifth at the tournament, defeating Boscobel and Catholic Central.


Brodhead 3, Clinton 0

BRODHEAD — The Brodhead Cardinals disposed of the Clinton Cougars in three sets 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 in RVC-Rock Division volleyball on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Senior Brynn Riesterer paced the Cardinals with 10 kills and four blocks. Senior Gretchen Kammerer added six kills, 21 assists and two aces. Junior Karli Krumweide led Brodhead in digs with 15 and had two aces. Senior Addie Leifker chipped in with 11 digs and two aces.

With the win, Brodhead has reached the 20-win mark on the season. The Cardinals (20-7, 5-1 RVC-Rock) traveled to Edgerton for another RVC-Rock match on Thursday, Oct. 2.


New Glarus 3, Marshall 2

NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights were able to hold off the Marshall Cardinals and win in five sets in Capitol South Conference volleyball on Tuesday, Sept. 30. 

The Knights took set one 25-21, but the Cardinals tied things up with a 25-16 win in set two. Set three was a thriller with New Glarus getting a hard-fought 26-24 win. But, Marshall tied it up again by taking set four 25-13 and forcing a fifth set. The Knights won the match with a 15-12 victory in set five. 

The Glarner Knights got clutch performances from junior Kalia Malaise with 14 kills, 21, digs, and three aces, junior Ellie Brenkman with 18 kills and two aces, freshman Macyn Pinnow, who had five kills, five aces, and 16 digs, and freshman Haley Julseth with 17 digs.

Malaise reached a milestone with 500 career digs.

New Glarus (8-15, 2-5) continues with Capitol South Conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Waterloo.


Darlington 3, Iowa-Grant 1

DARLINGTON — The Darlington Redbirds were victorious over the Iowa-Grant Panthers in four sets in SWAL volleyball on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Lilly Ritchie led the Redbirds with 11 kills. Maddie Gratz had 23 digs while Catie Hartwig and Chloe O’Brien came up with five blocks. Hartwig and Ritchie also contributed to the win with five blocks. 

Darlington (8-11, 2-4) will play a nonconference match on Monday, Oct. 6 at River Valley.
