NGM playoff eligible; Cardinals, Redbirds each need Week 9 wins

WATERLOO — New Glarus-Monticello became playoff-eligible with a 40-15 win over Waterloo Oct. 11 in Week 8.

The Glarner Knights (4-4, 2-1 Capitol South) led 28-7 at halftime and pushed that advantage to 34-7 in the third quarter.

Mason Martinson threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Connor Siegenthaler in the first quarter. After the Pirates (1-7, 0-3) tied it at 7-7, Siegenthaler gave the Knights the lead for good with a 1-yard plunge later in the frame.

In the second quarter, Siegenthaler scored on a 2-yard TD run, and then Martinson found Darris Schuett for a 1-yard score to make it 28-7. Martinson then connected with Cooper Dreyfus for an 8-yard TD pass in the third quarter.

Siegenthaler hit two field goals in the fourth quarter, one from 32 yards out and another from 36.

Martinson finished 19 of 30 passing for 179 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Martinson also added 105 yards rushing on 15 carries. Siegenthaler had 101 yards rushing on 18 carries. Nathan Streiff had 89 yards receiving on 10 catches.

Waterloo quarterback Chase Bostwick was 14 of 33 passing for 233 yards and a touchdown. Jordi Aguero had 81 yards rushing and a score for the Pirates.

New Glarus-Monticello hosts rival Belleville (4-4, 1-2) in Week 9. The Wildcats are in desperate need of a win to become playoff-eligible.


Mineral Point 47, Darlington 16

MINERAL POINT — The third-ranked Pointers gave the Redbirds everything they could handle in Week 8. Mineral Point (8-0, 5-0 SWAL) scored 34 straight points before eighth-ranked Darlington (5-3, 3-3) could get on the board.

The Pointers received touchdown runs from Will Straka (33, 13, and 24 yards), Dominik McVay (55), and Isaac Lindsey (23), plus a punt return for a score by Blaise Watters and an 80-yard kickoff return by McVay to open the second half.

Darlington trailed 28-0 after the first quarter, 40-8 at halftime and 47-8 through three quarters.

The Redbirds’ first touchdown came on a pick-6 off a throw from Lindsey with 2:56 left in the first half. Darlington’s other score came with 9:12 left in the fourth quarter when Braden Davis found Easton Evenstad for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Wyat Bredeson led Darlington with 58 rushing yards, while Carver Fitzsimons had two touches for 47 yards. Davis was 4 of 10 passing for 27 yards and four interceptions.

Darlington hosts Cuba City (2-6, 2-4) in Week 9. Mineral Point travels to unbeaten Lancaster, ranked No. 3 in Division 5, in the battle for the SWAL crown.


Brodhead-Juda 40, Big Foot 19

WALWORTH — The Cardinals trailed 19-18 at halftime after a score by Big Foot in the closing seconds of the first half, but the second half was all in favor to Brodhead-Juda.

Cole Hoesley was the man behind center for the Cardinals throughout the game, finishing 4 of 8 passing for 22 yards and two TDs. Hoesley connected with Brady Malkow for the first score of the game, and teammate Nick Naramore plunged in a second score from 3 yards out later in the opening quarter.

Big Foot (4-4 Rock Valley) responded in the second quarter, scoring back-to-back TDs by Owen Martin to take a 13-12 advantage. Dalton Naramore then scored from nine yards out to give Brodhead-Juda the lead again, but Big Foot QB Basil Demco found Jack Gillingham for a 13-yard score right before halftime.

In the third quarter, Nick Naramore scored twice on the ground, once from 11 yards out and a second time from just a yard away. Hoesley and Malkow connected on a 10-yard TD pass in the third as well. Brodhead-Juda outscored Big Foot 22-0 in the second half.

Dalton Naramore had 178 yards rushing on 20 carries, while brother Nick finished with 147 yards on 21 attempts. 

Brodhead (4-4) hosts McFarland (5-3) in Week 9. The Cardinals need a win to guarantee a spot in the postseason, while the Spartans have already punched their ticket to the D3 playoffs. The Rock Valley could have seven of its 10 teams in the playoffs after next week, representing in Divisions 3-5.


Pecatonica-Argyle 12, Belleville 6

BELLEVILLE — The Vikings picked up a solid nonconference win in Week 8. 

Belleville QB Carson Syse scored from 2 yards out in the first quarter to give the home Wildcats (4-4) the early lead, but Pecatonica-Argyle never gave up.

Hunter Enloe connected with Gavin Johnson for a 21-yard touchdown in the second quarter to tie the game at 6, and Dalton Turner busted off a 62-yard TD run in the third quarter for the Vikings (3-5).

Enloe finished 3 of 11 passing for 38 yards and two interceptions. Clay Ritschard had seven carries for 39 yards, while Johnson had two catches for 29 yards.

Syse was 19 of 34 through the air with two interceptions. Tyler Fahey had 68 yards rushing on 11 carries for Belleville, and Josh Grebel had five catches for 72 yards.
