New Glarus sweeps Waterloo to win the Capitol South Conference title

NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights defeated the Waterloo Pirates 13-3 on May 22 in Capitol South Conference baseball, then won again the next day on the road, 11-9 to clinch a second-straight league title. 

In the opener, the Glarner Knights struck for seven runs in the sixth inning to take control. Sophomore Nolan Julseth was hit by a pitch, driving in a run, and an error scored another run. Junior Ashlin Mihlbauer singled, which scored two runs, and Braden Rear hit a sacrifice fly, scoring another run. Nathan Hendrickson hit an RBI double and Hendrickson scored on a sacrifice fly. 

Senior Patrick Alt earned the win for the Glarner Knights. Alt surrendered seven hits and three runs (zero earned) over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one. Freshman Brock Roth collected the save in relief. Julseth led New Glarus with three RBIs. Mihlbauer and Ethan Colstad got three hits for the Knights. 

In Game 2, the Knights used a seven-run fifth inning to grab an 8-0 lead, which was then increased to 11-0 through the top of the sixth. Waterloo then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and seven in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting.

Matt Roth, Nolan Julseth, Patrick Alt, Ashlin Mihlbauer and Brock Roth all collected two hits for New Glarus. The Knights had five extra base hits in the game.

Julseth was the winner on the mound, allowing two unearned runs over six innings of work. 

New Glarus (13-7, 7-3 Capitol South) was scheduled to play at home on May 27 against Beloit Memorial.


Cheesemakers Close Regular Season With Sweep Of East Troy

EAST TROY — The Monroe Cheesemakers finished their baseball regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the East Troy Trojans in Rock Valley Conference, Valley Division action, 6-5 and 1-0. The sweep allowed the Cheesemakers to finish one game ahead of the Trojans in the RVC-Valley standings. 

In the first game, Monroe was down 5-1 but came back with a 5-run sixth inning to upend the Trojans 6-5. The Cheesemakers got RBI base hits from SS Ashton Hale, C Logan Meier, LF Cam Newcomer, and 2B Eli Schaefer. Pitchers Zane Seffrood and Owen Hicks combined to stop East Troy on seven hits, no earned runs, three walks, and eight strikeouts.

In the second game, sophomore Ian Berg pitched a complete game shutout. Berg allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out seven as the Cheesemakers prevailed 1-0 over the Trojans. The only run of the game was scored by Monroe’s Trent Wyss in the sixth inning. The Cheesemakers managed only three hits with C Logan Meier getting two of them. 

Monroe (13-8, 5-3) tied for second place with Delavan-Darien in the RVC-Valley. The Cheesemakers are a No. 10 seed in the WIAA Division 2 post-season and will go on the road to face No. 7 seed Mount Horeb on Thursday May 29 in a regional quarterfinal.


Potosi-Cassville Powers Past Pecatonica 11-4

BLANCHARDVILLE — Shortstop Ashton McNett scored two runs in the first two innings as the Pecatonica Vikings and Potosi-Cassville Chieftains were deadlocked at 4-4 after two innings. But, the Chieftains scored seven unanswered runs after that to beat the Pecatonica Vikings 11-4 in a Six Rivers Conference game on Thursday May 22. McNett finished the day 1x3 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior Austin Enloe also scored a run for the Vikings.

Pecatonica (11-12) concluded their Six Rivers Conference season with a record of 8-8. The Vikings host Wisconsin Heights on Tuesday May 27 in a nonconference game. Pecatonica is a No. 5 seed in the WIAA Division 4 Regional and will host No. 12 seed Williams Bay on Thursday May 29.


Barneveld Rallies In The 7th Inning To Beat Monticello-Albany

MONTICELLO — The Barneveld Golden Eagles rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Monticello-Albany Space Stallions 4-3 in Six Rivers Conference baseball on Thursday May 22. The Space Stallions entered the seventh inning leading 3-1 but could not hold the lead. Pitcher Cody Pryce had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored for Monticello-Albany. Sophomore Milo Smith went 1x2 with a walk and an RBI. Pryce pitched five innings and allowed one hit and one run. Junior Tyler Patchen pitched the final two innings and took the loss. 

The Space Stallions (2-14, 4-19) finish their regular season on Tuesday May 27 with a nonconference game at home against Evansville. Monticello-Albany is a No. 9 seed in the Division 4 playoffs and will travel to No. 8 seed Shullsburg-Benton on Thursday May 29 for a Regional Quarterfinal.


Darlington routs Argyle-Black Hawk

ARGYLE — Maddox Goebel and Zeke Zuberbuehler each went 3x4 with a walk and three runs scored in a nonconference 10-2 win over Argyle-Black Hawk on May 23. Goebel finished a home run shy of the cycle.

Landon Edgerton and Sloan Glendenning also doubled for Darlington, while Zuberbuehler stole two bases. Calum Crist pitched six innings for the Redbirds, striking out nine while allowing three hits and five walks.

Darlington jumped out to a 6-1 leads after four innings, and added three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh for insurance.

Mitchell Johnsen took the loss for ABH, allowing eight hits and four earned runs in 2.2 innings. Five Orioles came on in relief over the final 4.1 innings.

At the plate, Ike Waage had a hit and a walk, stole four bases and scored both runs for ABH. Jackson Berget drove in Waage each time.


Darlington drops a slugfest to Riverdale

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds came up short in a 14-12 loss at home against Riverdale on May 22. Darlington had 15 hits, highlighted by Sloan Glendenning’s home run. Darlington entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing by eight runs, and scored six in the frame.

Dante Flendenning allowed six runs in two innings of work, while Zeke Zuberbuhler allowed four runs in four innings. Peyton Dempsy took the loss, allowing four runs in the top of the seventh.


Belleville splits with Wisconsin Heights

BELLEVILLE — Belleville lost a Capitol South game at Wisconsin Heights 6-3 on May 22. 

The Wildcats had four hits, four walks and had three batters get hit by a pitch in the game. Vanguards pitcher Quenn Payne hit a home run and was one of three Wisconsin Heights players with two hits. Payne tossed 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing all three runs. Niles Monroe took the loss for Belleville, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings while striking out six batters.

Two days later, the Wildcats welcomed the Vanguards for a Saturday, May 24 tilt. 

Six different Belleville players collected a hit, with Dawson Smith driving in two base runners. Marcus Hebgen got the win on the mound, tossing six innings with seven strikeouts and three runs (one earned).


Turner topples Cardinals

BELOIT — Brodhead-Juda gave up an 8-spot in the second inning and never recovered in a 12-6 loss at Beloit Turner on May 22.

Sam Searls was the starter for the Cardinals, and he allowed 11 runs (seven earned) in just 2.2 innings of work. He threw 95 pitches in all, more than 30 per inning. The Trojans roped off four hits and nine walks against him. Parker Vanderpal tossed 3.1 innings of relief on just 55 pitches.

At the plate, Braylon Strehlow had two hits, including a triple, and Gabe Bockhop was 1x2 with two walks, two runs scored and a steal.


Baseball playoff brackets released

The WIAA recently released the playoff brackets for Divisions 2-4. The first round games will take place Thursday, May 29, with the second round on Tuesday, June 3.

In Division 2, Monroe received a 10-seed and will travel to Mount Horeb in the first round. Brodhead-Juda is an eight-seed and will host Delavan-Darien.

In Division 3, 13-seed Darlington will be at 4-seed New Glarus in Round 1. Eleven-seed Belleville is at Prairie du Chien. 

In Division 4, Monticello-Albany (9) will be at Shullsburg-Benton (8), while Pecatonica (5) will host Williams Bay (12). Argyle-Black Hawk (11) is at Southwestern (6).
