NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights have made things interesting in the Capitol South Conference by defeating the Belleville Wildcats 52-46 on Tuesday, Feb. 10. 

The win puts the Knights a half-game behind the Wildcats for first place in the Capitol South. Belleville has three conference games remaining in the regular season and New Glarus has two.

Junior Hayden Caskey hit back-to-back baskets to give the Wildcats an early 16-12 lead. Senior Toria Devoe made an off-balance shot and was fouled and completed a three-point play to give Belleville a 23-17 lead. Junior Ellie Brenkman made a basket and freshman Ellie Parman hit two free throws to get New Glarus to within 26-23 with 44.7 seconds left in the half. Devoe closed the half by making two free throws with 5.3 seconds left to give Belleville a 29-23 halftime lead.

Junior Kalia Malaise of New Glarus tied the game at 35-35 on a basket with 13:08 remaining. Junior Marie Besley grabbed a rebound off a missed shot and scored on a putback with 7:20 left to tie the game at 41-41. Freshman  Ellie Parman made one of two free throws to give New Glarus a 48-45 lead with 2:53 left. After a turnover by New Glarus, Devoe made one of two free throws to pull the Wildcats within two points at 48-46 with 46.4 left. After a missed free throw by junior Kate Parman, Ellie Brenkman got the rebound and was fouled. She made two free throws with 18.5 seconds left to give the Glarner Knights a 50-46 lead. Devoe missed a shot in the final seconds and Brenkman got the rebound and was fouled. She made two free throws to seal a 52-46 win for the Glarner Knights. 

New Glarus coach Kevin Parman said it was a team effort led by Ellie Parman to get the win. 

“They all did a great job. Ellie brings an amazing night all-around. Obviously, she had a tough assignment (guarding Toria Devoe) and knocked down free throws. But, nobody can do it by themselves. The girls all battled and found a way at the end,” Parman said. 

New Glarus (11-11, 5-1) was scheduled for a Capitol South home game while Belleville (13-7, 6-1) traveled to Cambridge for a league game on Friday, Feb. 13.


Lodi 39, New Glarus 38

NEW GLARUS — A lot happened in the final 11 seconds of the game between the New Glarus Glarner Knights and the Lodi Blue Devils. But, in the end, it was Lodi who walked away with a 39-38 win over New Glarus in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Saturday, Feb. 7.

Trailing 38-35, freshman Ellie Parman drained a three pointer from the corner to tie the score at 38-38. Lodi inbounded the ball and the Glarner Knights almost came up with a steal. But a foul was called instead and the Blue Devils made one of two free
