HIGHLAND — The Vikings improved to 19-3 overall on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Highland May 17. Pecatonica won the opener 15-1 and finished off the nightcap with a 10-6 victory.

Lane Busser got the win on the mound in Game 1, allowing just one earned run on two hits and no walks while striking out six. The only run he allowed was a solo blast to leadoff hitter Drew Hennessey in the bottom of the first inning. Hennessey had both Cardinals hits.

The Vikings scored four runs in the first and dropped an eight-spot in the second to pull away.

Carter Ruegsegger was 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, four runs scored and a hit by pitch for Pecatonica. Colton Schraepfer was 2 for 2 with a double, a walk, a hit by pitch, two RBIs and two runs. Easton Schraepfer had two hits and two RBIs.

“Lane did a great job for us,” Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. “We took advantage of seven walks, three hit by pitches and then came up with some timely hits.”

In Game 2, Everett Johnson toed the rubber and scored the win, tossing all five innings. Johnson walked two, struck out two and gave up six runs on 12 hits and 75 pitches. Highland’s Grant Hying went deep off Johnson with a 2-run shot in the fourth.

Ruegsegger’s hot bat stayed alive in the nightcap, as he blasted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 10-5. Busser also went deep, hitting a 3-run shot of his own in the bottom of the second.

Pecatonica trailed 3-0 after an inning and a half, but a six-spot in the bottom of the second put the Vikings in control. Easton Schraepfer had a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run, then Dakota Doescher smacked a two-run single. Busser followed with a 3-run tater to left.

The Vikings were scheduled to close out the regular season with a nonconference game at Mount Horeb May 20. Pecatonica hosts Darlington in the first round of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs May 23.

Three pitches later, Preston Banfield dropped a squeeze bunt, with IG pitcher Ross Havlik misplaying the ball, allowing Ubersox to score.
