EVANSVILLE — The New Glarus Glarner Knights got off to a good start for their season with a 62-53 win in nonconference action over the Evansville Blue Devils on Friday, Nov. 28. 

Nolan Julseth gave the Glarner Knights an early 9-7 lead on a three-pointer with 9:55 to go in the first half. Quinn Marty scored on an alley-oop layup to put the Knights in front 18-10 with 5:35 to go in the half. A three by Quinn Marty ballooned the lead to 21-12 with 4:42 remaining until halftime. Julseth hit a three and Grady Johnson made a basket in the final minute of the first half to give New Glarus a 30-21 halftime lead.

The start of the second half belonged to the Blue Devils as Evansville went on an 11-2 run over the first 3:22 of the second half to tie the game at 32-32. A field goal by Marty with 9:32 left helped the Knights regain the lead at 44-42. Matt Roth’s layup with 4:39 to go put New Glarus ahead at 53-49. Back-to-back layups by Julseth and Marty got the Knights a six-point lead at 57-51 with 3:00 remaining. A basket by Johnson maintained the six point lead at 59-53 with under 1:40 left. The game then turned into the Glarner Knights’ favor when Mathew Wickersham of Evansville picked a technical  foul when he tried a dunk on a fast break. He missed the dunk with one hand, and tried to grab the rebound with the other hand while hanging on the rim with his shooting hand with 55.3 seconds left. Julseth made 2-4 free throws over the final seconds to preserve a 62-53 win.

New Glarus (1-0) was scheduled to host the Columbus Cardinals of the Capitol North on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
