NG blows out two; Cheese lose at the buzzer; Redbirds win streak hits 16 straight

NEW GLARUS — Junior Nolan Julseth and senior Matt Roth each had a big night as the New Glarus Glarner Knights hammered the Belleville Wildcats 96-60 in Capitol South Conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Julseth scored 27 points and Roth had 22 points as the Knights remained in a first place tie with Cambridge in the Cap South. Senior Tatem Stampfli added 14 points for the Glarner Knights.

New Glarus (13-7, 6-1 Capitol South) played at Waterloo in a rare Wednesday game on Feb. 18 to make up a postponement. The Knights enjoyed another blowout win as they ripped the Waterloo Pirates 72-41.

Julseth came up big once again with 24 points as New Glarus built on a 34-24 halftime lead by holding the Pirates to 18 points in the second half. Tatem Stampfli, Grady Johnson and Tucker Sysko each contributed eight points for New Glarus. Nine players scored in the game for the Knights.  

New Glarus (14-7, 7-1) is tied with Cambridge for first place in the Capitol South. The Glarner Knights were scheduled to host second place Marshall, who is one game back in the standings, on Friday, Feb. 20.


East Troy 48, Monroe 47

EAST TROY — The Monroe Cheesemakers were eight seconds away from getting a one-point win on the road at East Troy on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in a Rock Valley Conference-Valley Division game. Instead, it was the Trojans who got the one-point win at the buzzer, 48-47.

The Cheesemakers had a 47-46 lead with eight seconds remaining as East Troy guard Cameron Polvi pulled into the front court and fed a pass to Brayden Phillips who had set a screen and rolled to the basket. Phillips got off a shot just as the Cheesemakers’ defense collapsed on him. The ball rolled around the rim twice and fell in as the buzzer sounded, giving the Trojans a 48-47 victory.

It was the second straight loss for the Cheesemakers, and the 47 points were a season-low. The Cheesemakers had been averaging 79.6 points per game in their previous nine games.

Senior Logan Taylor led the Cheesemakers with 16 points. Seniors Marcus Ott and Miles Versnik each had 11 points for Monroe.

The loss dropped Monroe to one-and-half games behind East Troy for first place in the RVC-Valley with two games remaining. Monroe is 15-7 overall and 9-3 in the RVC-Valley. The Cheesemakers will host Jefferson on Monday, Feb. 23 and close the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 26 at Whitewater.


Darlington 71, Boscobel 45

DARLINGTON — The last time the Darlington Redbirds lost a boys basketball game, people were putting away their party hats and noise makers after celebrating New Year’s Day. 

The Redbirds lost to Monroe 57-51 on Jan. 2 in a game played at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Since then, the Birds have rattled off 16 straight wins, the latest on Tuesday, Feb. 17 as they rolled past the Boscobel Bulldogs 71-45. The Redbirds remain unbeaten at 12-0 in the SWAL.

Senior Broker Buschor led the Redbirds in just about every offensive category. Buschor had 16 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists as the Redbirds jumped out to a 20 point halftime lead at 39-19.

Sophomore Ryder Fitzsimons and senior Grady O’Brien each chipped in with 14 points. 

The Redbirds are ranked No. 6 in Division 4 in the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski sports boys basketball media poll. 

Darlington (19-2, 12-0) traveled to Hazel Green on Friday, Feb. 20 for a SWAL game against the Southwestern Wildcats.


Darlington 76, River Valley 48

SPRING GREEN — The winning streak for the Darlington Redbirds reached 15 games after the Redbirds clobbered River Valley 76-48 in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Feb. 16.

Sophomore Ryder Fitzsimons was the top scorer for the Redbirds with 20 points. Senior Grady O’Brien had 18 points and senior Broker Buschor had another double-double by getting 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Zeke Zuberbuhler had five of Darlington’s 11 assists as the Redbirds got their fourth win this season over an SWC team. They had previously beaten Dodgeville, Platteville, and Lancaster. The win also kept the Redbirds unbeaten in SWAL conference play.


Pecatonica 63, Monticello 23

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Pecatonica Vikings raced off to a 44-6 halftime lead and got a resounding 63-23 win over the Monticello Ponies in Six Rivers East Conference basketball on Tuesday Feb. 17.

Junior Griffin Noll led the Vikings with 15 points. Junior Luke Leonard and senior Austin Enloe each had 11 points for Pecatonica.

For Monticello, junior Hunter Grossen and sophomore Cayden Marti each  scored six points. Junior Tyler Constantini and sophomore Sam Culberson scored four points for the Ponies.

Pecatonica (16-6, 12-4 Six River East) played a conference crossover game scheduled on Friday, Feb. 20 at River Ridge. Monticello (0-21, 0-16) also had a crossover game scheduled on Friday, Feb. 20 at Highland.


Evansville 75, Brodhead 57

EVANSVILLE — The Brodhead Cardinals were hoping to even the season series against the Evansville Blue Devils after the Blue Devils got a 69-51 win on Dec. 11. But, the Blue Devils pulled away in the second half and turned back the Cardinals 75-57 in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division action on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

It was anybody’s game at halftime as Evansville held a 32-30 lead. But, the Blue Devils made six of their nine three-pointers in the second half for a 43-27 scoring advantage.

Seniors Sam Searls and Nolan Bump each had 13 points to lead Brodhead. Junior Dylan Ross contributed 10 points for the Cardinals.

Evansville was led by junior Matthew Wicksham with 20 points.

Brodhead (7-18, 1-11 RVC-Rock) had the Clinton Cougars on their schedule for a conference game on Friday, Feb. 20.


Albany 54, Black Hawk 43

ALBANY — Senior Tyler Patchen and junior Ty Durtschi combined to score 30 points to lead the Albany Comets to a 54-43 win over the Black Hawk Warriors in Six Rivers Conference boys basketball on Tuesday, Feb. 17. 

Patchen led the Comets with 17 points and Durtschi had 13 points to fuel the Comets offense. Sophomore Brodyn Bakken also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Junior Cole Dunlavey had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Kayden Stauffacher added 11 points to lead Black Hawk. 

The Comets led throughout the first half and grabbed a 31-15 lead. The Comets maintained the lead all the way through the second half.

Albany (8-13, 6-11) had a Six Rivers Conference crossover game at Benton while Black Hawk (5-17, 2-12) had a crossover game at Potosi-Cassville on Friday, Feb. 20. 

In other boys basketball on Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Barneveld Golden Eagles routed the Argyle Orioles 71-45.
