Monroe wins its first Green County Open title

The Monroe Cheesemakers varsity golf team won the Green County Open on May 23 at Monroe Golf Club. It is the first time in the seven years of the event Monroe has won.

MONROE — The Cheesemakers won the Green County Open for the first time in since its start seven years ago. Monroe finished with a 320 overall, five strokes ahead of Hartford Union at the 15-team invitational May 23 at Monroe Golf Club.

Sun Prarie West (329) was third, Monona Grove (331) was fourth and Evansville (335) fifth. Elsewhere, New Glarus (348) was tied with Delavan-Darien for ninth, Argyle-Pecatonica (350) was 11th, Monticello-Belleville (355) 12th and Brodhead (424) was 15th.

Oregon freshman Owen Purdin was the medalist with a two-over-par 72. Monroe’s Brock Brandli was second with a 76. Monroe’s Brady Spotts (78) and Monticello-Belleville’s Evan Thomas (80) also placed in the top six.

Argyle-Pec third at SWAL tourney

NEW GLARUS — The Argyle-Pecatonica Golf Team shot a team score of 354 to place third in the SWAL Conference Tournament held May 22 at Edelweiss Chalet in New Glarus. Mineral Point won the tournament with a score of 322. Cuba City was second at 336. Avari Steiner shot an 80 to lead Argyle-Pec. Alex Ruetten shot an 82.

Ruetten, a senior, was named SWAL First Team All Conference. Steiner, a sophomore, was named Second Team All Conference.

“Avari and Alex really played well today until the last couple holes,” Argyle-Pec coach Chuck Chandler said. “Either of them could have won the tournament but just couldn’t finish their rounds the way they’re capable of. The WIAA Division 3 Regional is next week. Now it’s play well or go home for the season.”
