MONROE — The Cheesemakers won its annual home invitational Jan. 19 thanks to four first-place finishes. Monroe (187.5) led Darlington-Black Hawk (150), Belmont-Platteville (146.5) and the rest of the nine-team field for the team title.

“As a whole group, all 14 kids placed. And I don’t know if we’ve ever had that. It was a great team effort by everybody,” Monroe coach Tom Witt said. “Whitewater would have pushed us, because they would have had 14 kids as well.”

Twelve teams were scheduled to participate, but the snowstorm the day before kept a could of teams away. The meet was also pushed back an hour in the morning to allow roads to be cleared.

“Twelve teams were expected. Whitewater couldn’t come, Lake Mills couldn’t make it and then Walworth Big Foot didn’t come either,” Witt said. “When the initial teams were registered, we were going to have some really good brackets. We want to run a tradition 8-man bracket with a wrestle-back to third, which is a tradition tournament and what regionals is like.”

As a whole group, all 14 kids placed. And I don’t know if we’ve ever had that. It was a great team effort by everybody.

Monroe got first-place performances from Brady Schuh (106), Patrick Rielly (160) Alex Witt (170), and Bodie Minder (220) — all of which were top seeds.

“Based on the seeds, that’s how it should have ended up. All four of those kids were No. 1 seeds in their brackets, so true to that, they all did what they were supposed to do,” coach Witt said.

Schuh received a first-round bye and pinned DBH’s Cashton Hauser in the semifinal in 1:52. In the championship, Schuh pinned teammate Garrett Voegeli in 2:33. Voegeli won his semifinal match over Parkview’s Camron Duncan.

“We entered Garrett as an extra at 106, and based on wrestle-offs during the season, that stayed true to it that Brady is our 106-pound wrestler for a reason,” coach Witt said.

Rielly had a bye in the first round and pinned Beloit Memorial’s Fernando Badillo in 42 seconds in the semifinal. In the championship, Rielly won a 9-1 major decision over Cayden Milz of DBH.

“Patrick had a good match against Milz, he was up 6-0, or maybe 6-1 and was in control. He did what he was supposed to do to win the match,” coach Witt said.

Alex Witt won an 11-8 decision in the semifinals and then edged Justin Taylor of Poynette in the championship 7-4.

“Alex had his kid on his back — in my mind he had him pinned — but put a lot of extra energy into that match and got more tired than I am used to seeing him,” coach Witt said.

Minder pinned all three of his opponents in the first round. The 220-pound bracket was a round-robin style, instead of the traditional bracket with a third-place wrestle-back due to a lack of wrestlers meeting the weight class requirements.

“Bodie, record-wise, I knew he was going to win,” coach Witt said. “He pinned the Cuba City kid (Jake Neis) twice already, so it was kind of expected he’d win.”

Kyle Haldiman (113) took third, getting revenge on Trevor Oman of Cuba City-Southwestern. Oman pinned Haldiman in the opening round, but Haldiman won a 14-10 decision in the third-place match.

Liam Hermanson (145) was third, also getting revenge for a first-round loss. Hermanson lost to CC-SW’s Cooper Johnston 6-4 to start the day, but pinned Johnston to close out the evening.

Julian Gruber was third at 195, beating Chase Carratt of Parkview in a 19-5 major decision in the third-place match. Austin Cameron, filling in at heavyweight, scored his first varsity win in the first-place match, pinning DJ Sickels of Parkview at 4:59.

“Julian had some tough kids in front of him and he actually beat a ranked kid (Chase Carratt) in D3. He was dominating that match,” coach Witt said.

Having the week off could be good for us, too. We’ll probably take a couple of days off and have some lighter practices to let the bodies rest and get recharged before conference.
Monroe coach Tom Witt

For the War-Birds, Kolbe Ubersox (138) and Hunter Bredeson (152) each took first place honors, while Brady Horne (145), Leif Bredeson (285) and Milz (160) were all second. Hauser was third.

Ubersox (26-3), ranked first in Division 3 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online rankings, pinned both of his opponents in under a minute to take the title. Ubersox has the record books in his sights. The senior is just one pin from setting the school record (72) for pins and two overall wins from the school total wins mark (148).

Hunter Bredeson (22-7) is now five wins from 100 in his career having picked up a bye, a pin over Monroe’s Gabe Witt in the semifinals and a 13-7 decision against Korben Brown in the title match.

Monroe is now off for two weeks until the conference tournament Feb. 2.

“I think it’s good for us. A lot of times we’ll schedule a dual, but we didn’t have any open dates that matched anyone else,” coach Witt said. “Having the week off could be good for us, too. We’ll probably take a couple of days off and have some lighter practices to let the bodies rest and get recharged before conference.”
