Cheesemakers Play Three 1-Run Games, Win Two Of Them
The Monroe Cheesemakers are no strangers to one-run softball games, having played in four of them this past week. After a 6-5 win over Brodhead on April 8, the Cheesemakers beat Turner, 2-1 on April 10. On April 12, the Cheesemakers played in the Oregon Triangular and beat Stoughton, 3-2, then lost to Oregon 7-6.
In the April 10 game against Turner of the Rock Valley-Rock, senior Sophie Golembiewski scored on an RBI groundout by senior Olivia Feller in the sixth inning to give the Cheesemakers a 2-1 win to improve the Monroe’s record overall to 6-1.
On April 12, the Cheesemakers played two games in the Oregon Invitational. First, they played Stoughton and defeated the Vikings, 3-2. Monroe managed only three hits, but combined that with five walks to score single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings. Seniors Kaegann Paulson, and Chesney Slotten each got a hit and an RBI for the Cheesemakers. Sophomore Maddi Ruegsegger and Golembiewski had a walk and a run scored. Paulson pitched all seven innings and allowed just four hits and struck out 10 as the Cheesemakers improved their record to 7-1.
Later on April 12, the Cheesemakers faced the host team, the Oregon Panthers. Oregon prevailed 7-6, as the Panthers scored three runs in the first and another run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. But, the Cheesemakers roared back, getting six runs in the sixth, only to have the Panthers score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win. Senior Alexis Herbst and sophomore Paizley Kundert drove in two runs a piece for Monroe. Senior Brinley Roidt and freshman Jade Hawkinson got a hit and an RBI to pace the Cheesemakers. Monroe dropped to 7-2 overall with the loss. The Cheesemakers (3-0 in the RVC-Valley) played at Platteville in a non-conference game on April 14.
Argyle-Black Hawk Drops Two Six Rivers Games
Argyle-Black Hawk lost their first two games of the Six Rivers conference season with losses to the Highland Cardinals, 14-7 on April 10, and River Ridge, 9-2 on April 11.
Against Highland, the Cardinals scored 11 runs over the sixth and seventh innings to erase a 6-2 lead by the Orioles. Senior Ava Wiegel drove in three runs for the Orioles, while senior Maddy Lange got two hits and scored three runs for Argyle-Black Hawk. Senior pitcher Mya McNett pitched six innings, giving up 14 runs, but five of the runs were unearned as the Orioles committed five errors. Juniors Kylie Butler and Sam Kammes also had two hits a piece for Argyle-Black Hawk.
The Orioles squared off against the River Ridge Timberwolves on April 11 and lost 9-2. The Timberwolves rolled to a 9-0 lead before the Orioles avoided a shutout with two runs in the seventh inning. The Orioles committed seven errors which led to seven unearned runs. Brynn Harris came on in relief of senior starting pitcher Mya McNett and got 10 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Wiegel, Kammes, and Butler each got a base hit for the Orioles.
With the two losses, the Orioles are 0-2 in the Six Rivers Conference, and 4-3 overall. Argyle-Black Hawk played at home against Monticello-New Glarus on April 14 and at Barneveld on April 15.
Pecatonica Vikings Prevail Over Benton-Shullsburg
The Pecatonica Vikings came out on top in a pitchers’ duel with Benton-Shullsburg 2-0 in four innings on April 10 at Benton. There were only four hits in the game between the two teams, but the Vikings captured their first win of the season with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Senior pitcher Diana Hendrickson was magnificent for the Vikings, allowing just one hit with six strikeouts and no walks. As tough as Hendrickson was, Benton-Shullsburg starting pitcher Jessie Ray, a senior, was just as tough. Ray gave up just three hits and issued one walk to go with five strikeouts. Pecatonica third baseman Gretta Schraepfer was 2x2 with a run scored. Pecatonica (1-4 overall, 1-1 in the Six Rivers Conference) hosted Barneveld on April 14.
Belleville Wildcats Rally For Exciting 14-12 Win Over Madison La Follette-East
Sophomore Bryn Prochaska hit a home run and two doubles to drive in four runs and rally the Belleville Wildcats to a 14-12 come from behind win over Madison Lafollette-East on April 11 in nonconference softball. It was the first win of the season for Belleville. Prochaska went 3x5 and scored three runs as the Wildcats came back from a 7-3 deficit in the third inning. The Wildcats scored in every inning but the fourth and entered the bottom of the seventh tied 12-12 before winning it with a pair of runs in the seventh. Prochaska also pitched the final 3 1/3 innings to get the win in relief. Senior Ava Banash was 3x5 with two RBIs and Story Fossum played four different positions while going 2x5 and had two RBIs. Belleville (1-3 overall, 0-1 Capitol South) played a nonconference game against Edgerton on April 14.
Jubany Loses Two Six Rivers Games, Wins and Loses in Jubany Triangular
The Juda-Albany Panthers suffered two losses in Six Rivers Conference action, then split two games in the Jubany Triangular over the weekend. The Panthers lost to River Ridge 8-5 on April 10 and to Potosi-Cassville 6-3 on April 11 in Six Rivers Conference action. Jubany recovered with a 6-5 win over Palmyra-Eagle but lost to Clinton 7-1 in the Jubany Triangular on Sat. April 12.
In the game on April 10 against the River Ridge Timberwolves, the Panthers trailed 3-1 in the fourth inning, but tied it up, 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. River Ridge pulled away with a run in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth. Sophomore Anna Bartels blasted a home run for the Panthers.
On April 11, Jubany grabbed a 3-2 lead with three runs in the third inning against Potosi-Cassville, but the Chieftains tied the game in the fourth, and got three more runs in the sixth to come away with a 6-3 over the Panthers. Freshman Rhyleigh Brown led the way for the Panthers by going 1x3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Panthers got a win on April 12 as they defeated Palmyra-Eagle 6-5 in the first game of the Jubany Triangular. The Panthers won the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brown went 4x4 and scored two runs. Junior Emerson Briggs connected for two hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs with a run scored. In the second game, the Clinton Cougars rolled to a 7-1 win over the Panthers to drop Juda-Albany to 3-4 overall. The Panthers (0-3 Six Rivers Conference) are back into conference action at Monticello-New Glarus on April 15.
Belmont Doubles Up MNG in Softball 10-5
The Monticello-New Glarus Ponies fell behind 7-0 and could not recover as the Belmont Braves claimed a 10-5 win over the Ponies in Six Rivers conference softball on April 10. Belmont pitcher Kalli Jo Hodgson held the Ponies scoreless over the first four innings while the Braves built up a 7-0 lead. The Ponies finally got to Hodgson with a four-run fifth inning and added another run. Senior pitcher Heidi Olson went 2x3 with two hits and two RBIs for MNG. Olson pitched all seven innings, and gave up 10 runs on 10 hits, but the Ponies committed four errors which led to six unearned runs. Freshman first baseman Mallory Miller got on base three times with a pair of walks and a base hit. Freshman Eliza Legris scored two runs for the Ponies.
Monticello-New Glarus Pounds Darlington 13-1
The Monticello-New Glarus Ponies racked up a 13-0 lead in the first three innings and rolled to a 13-1 win over the Darlington Redbirds in non-conference softball on April 12 at Sieg Field in Darlington. Third baseman Rayna Vogel went 3x4 with two RBIs while first baseman Heidi Olson went 2x3 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior shortstop Molly Olson chipped in with two hits in three at-bats and three runs scored to lead the way for Monticello-New Glarus (3-2 overall). The Redbirds were limited to just four hits off Monticello-New Glarus starting pitcher Malorie Miller. The Ponies (1-2 in the Six Rivers Conference) played in two Six Rivers conference games at Argyle-Black Hawk on April 14 and at home against Juda-Albany on April 15. Darlington fell to 0-7 overall with the loss. The Redbirds (0-3 in the SWAL) hosted Boscobel on April 14.
Cuba City Pitcher Throws Perfect Game Against Darlington
Cuba City Cubans pitcher Payton Gile totally shut down the Darlington Redbirds by firing a perfect game April 10 at Cuba City in a 17-0 SWAL Conference win for the Cubans. Gile, a senior, allowed no hits and no walks in facing the minimum in five innings. Gile also struck out 12 as the Cubans improved to 1-0 in conference play and 5-2 overall. Junior Sydney Wiegel and senior Ella Winslow pitched for the Redbirds, combining to strike out five batters. Darlington is now 0-2 in the conference and 0-5 overall. Darlington hosted Boscobel in SWAL tilt April 14.
