Monroe trips Portage; Albany takes a pair

MONROE — The Cheesemakers knocked off Portage Jan. 8.

Megan Benzschawel led Monroe with 16 points, while Lily Bobak had 11 and Sloane Ambrose 10. Breanna Giasson added 7 points fighting in the post.

The Cheesemakers led 27-14 at halftime, and outscored the Warriors 32-24 in the second half. Emma Kreuziger led Portage with 11 points.


Highland 67, Argyle 43

ARGYLE — Highland outscored the Orioles 51-22 in the second half to pull away with a victory Jan. 7 in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game.

Rachel Miller led the way with 21 points for Highland while Meg Tarrell had 12. Katelyn Esser notched a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Cardinals, which had 23 combined team steals. 

Argyle was led in scoring by Grace Ganshert, who had 15 points. Maggie Godfrey finished with 10 points and Tori Lantz had 9. Highland won the turnover battle, 19-32, and out-rebounded the Orioles 44-23.


Brodhead 57, McFarland 52

BRODHEAD — Sophomore Abbie Dix had 28 points to pace the Cardinals in a tough home victory over the Spartans Jan. 7. The two teams went into halftime tied at 24, but Brodhead outscored McFarland 33-28 in the second half.

Kiarra Moe and Joie Steinmann each had 8 points for Brodhead, while Teagan Mallegni led McFarland with 15 points. Dix was 10 of 14 from the free throw line in the game, and the Cardinals were 10-for-14 as a whole in the second half from the stripe.


Monticello 47, Barneveld 33

BARNEVELD — The Ponies took a 23-11 lead into halftime and never looked back in their game Jan. 7.

Mackie Errthum and Ellie Gustafson both collected double-doubles for Monticello. Errthum finished with 18 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocks. Gustafson had 15 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Harley Disch added 11 points, 3 rebounds and an assist.

Two days later, the Ponies defeated Cambria-Friesland 56-48 in a nonconference game at Monticello.


New Glarus 70, Waterloo 46

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights used a hot start to cool off the Pirates in a game pitting two Capitol Conference teams against one another Jan. 8.

New Glarus jumped out to a 44-22 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Senior Jaylynn Benson led the way with 21 points to lead the Knights, while freshman sharpshooter Lindsey Schadewalt added 20 points. Ellie Eichelkraut finished with 8, as nine different New Glarus players scored in the contest.

Waterloo had just four players score: Skyler Powers (17), Julia Asik (10), Joslyn Wolff (10) and Sophia Schneider (9).


Albany 71, Juda 22

JUDA — The Comets jumped out to a 47-14 lead at halftime in a smooth victory over the Panthers Jan. 7.

Brianna Dahl led Albany with 14 points. Kaiya Zurfluh had 12 points, Gracie Freitag 10, Jada Flannery 9 and Emileigh Dallman finished with 8 for the Comets.

Ciarrah Davis and Anna Skoumal each had 9 points for Juda. 


Albany 48, Barneveld 38

ALBANY — On Jan. 9, the Comets knocked off the Eagles. Dahl led Albany with 14 points, while Payton Wachholz finished with 10. Flannery added 9

Albany led 20-18 at halftime and closed out the game thanks to a 12-for-16 mark from the free throw line in the second half.

In other area girls basketball action, Darlington defeated Southwestern 49-45 Jan. 7, then knocked off Riverdale 56-44 on Jan. 9.
