Monroe tips Mt. Horeb in challenge

MOUNT HOREB — The Cheesemakers won the grind-it-out Badger Challenge game at Mount Horeb Jan. 27, 40-36. The game had originally been scheduled for Jan. 18 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Freshman Taylor Jacobson recorded a double-double to lead the way for Monroe, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Megan Benzschawel also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, plus a block and four steals. Grace Tostrud added eight points and six rebounds.

Monroe was just 3 of 16 (18.7%) from beyond the arc, and just 15 of 57 (26.3%) from the field in the game. The Cheesemakers even struggled from the free throw line (7 of 19, 36.8%) and went into halftime with just a one-point lead at 22-21.

The Cheesemakers (7-6, 4-3 Badger South) were set to face Freeport Jan. 30 in another make-up game before traveling to conference-leading Oregon (12-4, 8-1) Feb. 1.


Cuba City 53, Darlington 50

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds hung tight in a major SWAL showdown Jan. 28.

Brenna McDonald had 11 points to lead Darlington, while Lizzie Schwartz finished with 10 and Marissa Gould nine. Nine total Redbirds scored in the contest.

Kiera Holzemer had 13 points and Parker Kopp added 11 for Cuba City, which led by just one point at halftime.


Clinton 67, Brodhead 57

CLINTON — Kiarra Moe had 15 points and Abbie Dix finished with 12 as the Cardinals fell behind big early on and couldn’t rally back.

The Cougars led 38-16 at halftime, while Brodhead outscored the hosts 41-29 in the second half. 

Addyson Ciochon led Clinton with 17 points. Ten different Cougars scored in the game.


Cambridge 47, New Glarus 42

NEW GLARUS — The Knights scored just 12 points in the first half and couldn’t quite cap the rally in the second in a Capitol South Conference loss to the Blue Jays Jan. 28.

Maya Holzhueter led Cambridge with 26 points. Jaylynn Benson had 19 for New Glarus, which also got eight points from Lily Himmelmann and Shealyn Klosterman-Havens. Emma Marty added seven points.

In other area results, Highland defeated Juda 74-43 in a nonconference game Jan. 28.
