MONROE — The Cheesemakers rebounded from a Reedsburg thumping with a road victory against Portage two days later. On May 2, Monroe lost to Reedsburg 21-6. On May 4, with the game pushed back a day due to inclement weather, the Cheesemakers used a pair of seventh-inning runs to knock off Portage.
Tied at 2-2 entering the final inning, Monroe strung together four-straight baserunners thanks to three errors by the Warrior infield. Sloane Ambrose drove in the go-ahead run when shortstop Ella Denure committed an error with the bases loaded. Two batters later, Sophie Golembiewski walked in another run. The Cheesemakers nearly got another, as Karis Paulson was caught trying to swipe home.
In the bottom of the seventh, Golembiewski forced Portage into a 1-2-3 inning for the complete game victory, allowing two unearned runs while striking out three. At the plate, Golembiewski hit a double and walked twice.
In the loss to Reedsburg two days earlier, the Cheesemakers committed nine errors, which led to 12 unearned runs against Monroe pitcher Katrina Sathoff.
Olivia Feller had two doubles for Monroe, while Ambrose and Sathoff also doubled once apiece. Ambrose, Sathoff, Golembiewski and Feller each had two hits. Reedsburg’s Melissa Dietz hit for the cycle from the 3-hole. Leadoff hitter Kylie Molitor was 5-for-6, and the Beavers out-hit Monroe 19-11.
Brodhead 3, Poynette 2
POYNETTE — The Cardinals scored a major nonconference win May 2 over one of the state’s top programs.
Mckenna Young had 17 strikeouts while scattering two hits and a walk for Brodhead. Both runs against her were unearned. At the dish, Young smashed a 2-run home run in the third and added a walk.
Brodhead 12, Big Foot 17
WALWORTH — The Cardinals turned a 3-0 lead into a mercy rule victory thanks to a 9-run sixth inning on May 4.
Young smashed her second home run in as many games, driving in three runs. Ava Risum had two hits at the plate and 14 strikeouts in a complete game shutout, scattering three hits in the process. Cora Hafen had three hits for Brodhead, while Taetum Hoesly, Daisy Nelson, Tatum Ceslock, Madisyn Kail and Jerrica Schwartz each had two hits. Schwartz had two doubles and three RBIs. Hoesly, Ceslock and Nelson each added doubles.
Argyle 2, Juda-Albany 1
JUDA — The Orioles did just enough to squeak by the Panthers in a crucial Six Rivers East showdown May 4.
Ava Wiegel walked to open the fourth inning, and courtesy runner Sarah Helfvogt stole second on the very next pitch. She later moved to third base on a passed ball, and a Mya McNett groundout to short scored Helfvogt for the game’s final run.
Juda-Albany’s lone run came unearned against Orioles pitcher Grace Ganshert, who finished the night with five strikeouts and four hits allowed on the mound. Juda-Albany counterpart Avary Briggs struck out six while allowing three hits and three walks. Both runs were earned.
Neither team had an extra base hit, but Argyle stole five bases on six tries. The Panthers were 1-for-2 on steal attempts.
Barneveld 1, Argyle 0
BARNEVELD — On May 2, the Orioles took a tough blow in the conference standings against the Eagles. Ganshert struck out nine and allowed just two hits and an unearned run — but the single run was the only score from either team.
Barneveld’s Daelynn Rhoades struck out 12 while scattering five hits and a walk. The Eagles scored the lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball with two outs.
Pecatonica 8, Monticello-New Glarus 2
BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the second inning and never looked back in a May 2 win over the Ponies in a Six Rivers East game.
Lexi Peterson homered and drove in three for Pecatonica, while Nivaeh Gross tripled and Trinity Gruenenfelder doubled. Tessa Green had three hits, while Gruenenfelder, Gross and Maddie Hirsch each had two hits. Katelyn Eyler doubled for MNG.
Chloe Schraepfer struck out 13 and allowed just five hits on the mound for Pecatonica. Both runs were unearned. Kira Whisler pitched the first two inning for MNG before being replaced by Jaden Zuber, who allowed just one run and struck out six in four innings of work.
Southwestern 7, Darlington 4
HAZEL GREEN — Four Redbirds had a multi-hit game, but the host Wildcats grabbed the win May 2.
Greta Volkening, Sophie Wiegel, Mila Gille and Jaylyn Schwartz each had two hits for Darlington, with Volkening scoring twice. Wiegel took the loss on the mount, giving up five earned runs in a complete game effort.
Darlington grabbed a brief 1-0 lead, but Southwestern tied it in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, Southwestern added three runs. Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, Darlington scratched across two more to keep the pressure on, but the Wildcats added two runs in the bottom of the sixth for insurance.
