Monroe punished by Sauk, KMMO; Fury split

MONROE — The Cheesemakers’ boys co-op hockey team let a narrow game turn into a blowout against KMMO on Dec. 4. Two days earlier, Sauk Prairie defeated Monroe 9-0.

Against KMMO, Monroe fell behind 1-0 after six minutes of play in the first period, but just 40 seconds into the second, Seth Brandt evened it at 1-1. KMMO scored the next six goals — three in the second, three in the third — to go ahead 7-1, putting the game out of reach.

Brandt scored a second goal on a power play with just 54 seconds remaining. Josh Haight and Aiden Grey assisted.

Kyle Theorin had 43 saves in net, but the Cheesemakers were out-shot 50-22 in the game.

In the Dec. 2 game at Sauk Prairie, the Eagles scored four times in the first, two in the second and added three more for good measure in the third. Sauk Prairie out-shot Monroe 42-13. Xander Obert had 33 saves in net for Monroe.

The Cheesemakers were hit with 22 minutes of penalties on seven infractions, while the Eagles had nine minutes on just three penalties. Three of Sauk Prairie’s goals came via the power play, while another one was a shorthanded goal in the second period.

Luke Mast had six points for the Eagles, a hat trick and three assists, while Nick Mast adding two goals and two assists.

Fury split with Lightning, Ice Bears

ASHWAUBENON — The Rock County Fury split a pair of games last week, defeating Badger Conference rival Badger Lightning 2-1 on Dec. 2 before dropping a 5-0 decision to the Green Bay Area Ice Bears Dec. 3.

On Dec. 2, the Badger Lightning took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Fury responded late in the second, as Emma Kilgora scored on a power play off an assist from Anna Malone. With 1:29 left in the third on a power play, Sara Loerke slipped the puck past the netminder, lighting the lamp for the game-winning goal. Amery Stuckey and Kilgora assisted. Olivia Cronin stopped 22 shots, as the Fury out-shot the Lightning 34-23 in the contest.

Against the Ice Bears, the Fury gave up two goals in the first and two more in the second. The Ice Bears outshot the Fury 47-4, with three of Rock County’s shots coming in the third period with the game in check. Cronin saved 42 shots in net for the Fury.
