Cheesemakers head coach Matt Bordner came away very impressed with the first outing of the season for Monroe.

“We opened up with our singles lineup and I was very pleased with how consistent Addy, Ryann, Jade, and Mads played,” he said. “Mads worked hard to close out her match, coming back from down 0-3 to win her match with a second set tiebreaker shutout. Our doubles teams played extremely well. We have lots to work on with doubles, but the consistency and chemistry appeared to be great to start out the season. Layla and Rylee looked extremely confident as they return together after last year’s strong season.”

Last season, the Cheesemakers lost 4-3 to Fort Atkinson/Cambridge at the East Troy Invite.

Monroe 6, Whitewater 1

No. 1 Singles — Taryn Rothwell, Whitewater def. Adeline Eckerman, Monroe, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

No. 3 Singles — Miah Coppes, Monroe def. Adamari Barajas, Whitewater, 6-4, 6-0.

No. 4 Singles — Sophia Wu, Monroe def. Mia Mendez, Whitewater, 6-1, 6-2.

“We dropped a very competitive match at No. 1 singles, with Addy losing to Rothwell who played extremely well,” Bordner said. “Miah and Sophia slid into our singles lineup and played their first varsity matches of their career.”

No. 1 Doubles — Layla Pallesen and Rylee Svendsen, Monroe def. Madeline Joseph and Kiani Aranda, Whitewater, 6-0, 6-1.

No. 2 Doubles — Kaya Holverson and Alexis Gertsch, Monroe def. Elizabeth Lawton and Natalia Casillas, Whitewater, 6-3 , 6-1.

No. 3 Doubles — Sophie Conway and Caedyn Blackburn, Monroe def. Maria Pena-Aburto and Ruth Lopez, Whitewater, 6-0, 6-2.

“Doubles again played well and took advantage of a relatively young Whitewater lineup. I think we have an aggressive group of doubles players on this team and I’m looking forward to their development as we get further into the season,” Bordner said. “We were scheduled to play a third round today against Edgerton but a strong storm came through as we started the third round and we were rained out. We will play Edgerton tomorrow on Day 2 of the East Troy Invite as we travel to Delavan-Darien to play.”
