Monroe, NG open season with tie

NEW GLARUS — The Monroe Cheesemakers and the New Glarus Glarner Knights opened their baseball seasons with a 6-6 tie in nonconference action on Tuesday, March 31.

The Cheesemakers scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. But, New Glarus went ahead in the third inning on an error by Monroe that scored a run followed by a two-run double by senior Matt Roth. 

The Cheesemakers pulled to within 3-2 with a run in the second inning, but the Knights countered with a run in the third when Braden Rear battled through a seven-pitch at-bat with a base hit and an RBI to make it 4-2. New Glarus increased their lead to 6-2 with two runs in the fifth inning. The Cheesemakers rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 6-5 then tied the game at 6-6 on junior Ian Berg’s RBI single in the sixth inning. There was no scoring in the seventh inning and the game was declared a 6-6 tie.

Senior Marcus Ott started for the Cheesemakers and gave up four hits and four runs (zero earned) over three and one-third innings, striking out four and walking four. Senior Matt Roth started on the mound for New Glarus and allowed eight hits and two runs over four innings, striking out four and walking one. 

The Cheesemakers got 13 hits in the game, led by senior Trent Wyss, who went 3x3 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Zane Seffrood, senior Logan Meier, and Berg each collected two hits for Monroe. New Glarus had just five hits, but freshman Kaleb Webber scored two runs to lead the Glarner Knights’ offense, which stole five bases in the game. 

Monroe (0-0-1) had Portage on their schedule for a nonconference game on Thursday, April 2 while New Glarus (0-0-1) was scheduled to travel to Johnson Creek on Saturday, April 4.


Parkview 8, Monticello-Albany 6

MONTICELLO — The Parkview Vikings snapped a 6-6 tie with two runs in the seventh inning to beat the Monticello-Albany Space Stallions 8-6 in nonconference baseball on Tuesday, March 31.

The Space Stallions came back from a 5-3 deficit in the second inning and a 6-5 deficit in the sixth inning only to see the Vikings put together a two-run rally in the seventh inning to win it.

Senior Tyler Patchen started for MA but gave way to four other pitchers after pitching one and 2/3 innings. Patchen contributed in a bit way at the plate by going 2x4 with two RBIs. Junior Ty Durtschi went 3x3 with a run scored while junior Tyler Constantini got a double and walked three times and scored three runs for the Space Stallions. 

Monticello-Albany (0-1) was scheduled to travel to Darlington for a nonconference game on Thursday, April 2.


Darlington 13, 

Argyle-Black Hawk 3

DARLINGTON — Zeke Zuberbuhler belted a home run and Dante Glendenning and Grady O’Brien each got a double and had two RBIs as the Darlington Redbirds beat the Argyle-Black Hawk Warbirds 13-3 in five innings in a nonconference season opener.

Darlington wasted no time taking command by scoring seven runs in the first inning. Glendenning and Mason Wiegel each pitched two innings and Calum Crist pitched one inning for the Redbirds and allowed just one hit and one earned run.

Braylon Bidlingmaier and Max Soper drove in runs for Argyle-Black Hawk. Ole Isely got the lone hit of the game for the Warbirds.

Darlington (1-0) was scheduled to host Monticello-Albany in a nonconference game while Argyle-Black Hawk (0-1) travels to Parkview for a nonconference game on Thursday, April 2.


McFarland 11, Brodhead-Juda 1

McFARLAND — The Brodhead-Juda Cardinals started their baseball season with an 11-1 loss to the McFarland Spartans in nonconference baseball on Tuesday, March 31.

The Cardinals were held to just one hit and one run. The Spartans scored first in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Brodhead-Juda (0-1) tied it with a run in the top of the third inning, but McFarland (1-0) re-took the lead with three runs in the third inning to go ahead 4-1. McFarland pulled away with seven runs over the next three innings. 

The same two teams were scheduled to play again at Brodhead on Thursday, April 2 in nonconference action.


Evansville 3, Belleville 2

EVANSVILLE — The Evansville Blue Devils used a three-run fifth inning to upend the Belleville Wildcats 3-2 in season-opening nonconference baseball on Tuesday, March 31.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to see the Blue Devils take the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Belleville managed only three hits, but Marcus Hebgen got one of those three hits and scored a run. Hebgen pitched five innings and allowed three runs, two earned runs, three hits, two walks and he fanned four batters while taking the loss. Rayden Taylor was 1x3 and drove in a run for the Wildcats.

Belleville (0-1) had a nonconference game scheduled at Dodgeville on Thursday, April 2.
