MIDDLETON — Monroe-New Glarus got moved up to Division 1 for the 2023 postseason, but that didn’t stop the Cheese Knights from breaking records at the Middleton Sectional on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Four team records were broken and, in the process, MNG qualified six events for the state meet in Waukesha on Saturday, Nov. 11.

“This is the first year that MNG swam Division 1 for the postseason. The qualifying time standards for state are faster in Division 1,” co-head coach Rachel Root said. “The girls have been working hard all season and have had a record-setting year. They swam extremely well at sectionals.”

Sophomore Megan Chapman broke two individual team records and was part of the record-setting 200-yard freestyle relay. She will be swimming in four events at state.

“My goal all season has been to break those two records,” Chapman said. “I worked hard all season leading up to the sectional meet with that goal in mind. In talking with my coaches, I knew that if I were to go the times needed to set new team records, I would also have a good chance of making it to state.”

Chapman’s 200-freestyle time broke Jess Weeden’s record, which was previously set in 2009. She broke another record in the 500-freestyle, which was set by Morgan Erstad in 2019. The 200-freestyle relay team also broke its own record, set the weekend prior at the Badger Conference meet in McFarland.

The 200-yard medley relay team kicked off the meet with its record time, which surpassed that set by Morgan Erstad, Karley Michels, McKenzie Hammer and Francesca Schiro in 2019.
