JANESVILLE — The Monroe Cheesemakers jumped all over the Milton Redhawks with four goals in the first period on their way to a 6-2 win in Badger Conference boys hockey played at the Woodman’s Sports and Convention Center in Janesville on Thursday, Jan. 8.
Senior Brody Goode scored a hat trick and had an assist in the win for the Cheesemakers. Goode scored his first goal in the first period at 3:27 with assists by senior Brady Stuart and junior Beau Janecke, giving Monroe a 1-0 lead. Senior Hans Brandt made it 2-0 with a goal assisted by sophomore Gibson Daly at 4:00 to make it 2-0. Goode scored again with another assist by Daly at 6:16 to put Monroe up 3-0. Goode got the hat trick with his third goal of the period and Daly’s third assist of the period at 10:18, giving the Cheesemakers a 4-0 cushion.
In the second period, senior Brady Stuart got assists by sophomore Barrett Brandli and Goode on a goal at 10:12, to make the Cheesemakers’ lead 5-0. Stuart connected again in the third period, this time it was an unassisted goal at 6:49 to extend the Cheesemakers’ lead to 6-0.
The Redhawks scored a couple of goals in the final five minutes to make the final score 6-2. The Cheesemakers had 22 shots on goal while senior goalie Brock Brandli had 35 saves for Monroe. The Cheesemakers killed four penalties, including a short stretch in the third period where the Redhawks had a 5-on-3 advantage and Monroe killed both penalties.
Monroe (4-9, 2-4) had a nonconference game scheduled at home with Whitefish Bay on Saturday, Jan. 10.
Whitefish Bay 4, Monroe 1
MONROE — The Cheesemakers had a first period lead and were tied 1-1 in the third period over Whitefish Bay. But the Storm broke through with three goals over a 10 minute stretch and beat the Cheesemakers 4-1 on Saturday, Jan. 10 in nonconference action at the Stateline Ice and Community Expo Center.
The Cheesemakers took a 1-0 lead in the first period as senior Han Brandt scored an unassisted goal at 5:54. The Storm tied it at 1-1 on a power play goal early in the second period. Senior Brody Kittleson was serving a two minute minor for holding and Whitefish Bay took advantage with a goal at 1:25 in the second period for the equalizer.
The score would stay at 1-1 until the third period when the Storm pushed across three goals and the Cheesemakers were unable to recover. Monroe had three power play opportunities throughout the game but couldn’t score. Senior Brock Brandli totaled 31 saves for the Cheesemakers while Monroe fired off 27 shots on goal.
Cheesemaker coach Barry Einbeck said his team played tough, but the third period was a difference-maker.
“There was a couple of breakdowns in our D-zone and I think the boys got tired but they didn’t quit, which was nice to see and they just kept battling and we came up short today,” said Einbeck.
Monroe (4-10, 2-4 Badger Conference) will face Waunakee at home in Badger Conference action on Thursday, Jan. 15.
