Monroe Hounds runners-up in Large School
Cross County

PLATTEVILLE — In the 26-team Dick McKichan Invite on Saturday, Oct. 5, the ranked Monroe Hounds finished runners-up in the Large School Division. Schools were separated into two divisions — large and small — for results. Of the 23 girls teams that participated, three of them were Division 1, 12 were Division 2 and seven were Division 3. In the boys’ 26-team race, there were two Division 1 teams, 14 Division 2 teams and eight Division 3 teams. Tri State Homeschool is private.

Monroe girls, ranked No. 9 in Division 2, were just nine points behind Division 1 Union Grove. In Small School and Large School Divisions combined, the Lady Hounds took third. Lancaster — a Division 3 team by enrollment but who got bumped up to Division 2 due to the WIAA competitive balance rule — was the overall champion. Mary McKenzie, a two-time state qualifier, finished in the top 10 in the Large School Division to lead Monroe.

Monroe boys, ranked No. 4 in Division 2, finished second in the Large School Division and second overall to McFarland, ranked No. 3 in Division 2. Tre Dammen, a two-time state qualifier coming off a PR in Midwest Invite, finished fourth in the Large School Division to lead the Hounds.

Of note in the Large School Division, New Glarus-Monticello’s Molly Olson finished seventh. She was the leading runner in last year’s state-qualifying team and has continued to lead the Knights in 2024.

In the Small School Division, Darlington girls finished runners-up to St. Ambrose Academy. The Redbirds, ranked No. 4 in Division 3, accomplished this feat without their top runner, Adalee Berget. Instead, junior Piper DePauw, a member of last year’s state-qualifying team, led Darlington.

Albany’s Kaleb Broughton finished in the top 10 for the Small School Division. The Comets finished fourth behind ranked St. Ambrose Academy, Division 3 Iowa-Grant and Division 2 Wisconsin-Heights Barneveld.
