MAZOMANIE — Monroe’s volleyball team finished 2-3 at the Wisconsin Heights tournament Sept. 28, one year after winning the event.

The Cheesemakers went 1-2 in group play, defeating Cambridge 25-14, 25-20 before losing in three sets to Riverdale (17-25, 25-21, 14-16) and Prairie du Chien (27-25, 16-25, 7-15).

In the Silver Bracket, Monroe defeated Potosi 25-16, 25-13 to reach the finals, but were upended by Iowa-Grant in a tight title match 26-28, 21-25.

“Overall, (we) played pretty competitively throughout the day,” Monroe head coach Heidi Witt said. “This is a long day for the players so finding the energy to play hard all day can be difficult at times. For the most part, we were able to do that.”

Zoee Pond led the Cheesemakers with 32 kills, 11 aces and 15 digs. Lexi Davis finished with 21 kills while Cassi Gersbach tallied 17 kills and 11 blocks on the day. Monroe also received seven blocks from Makayla Harrow, seven aces and 12 digs from Bri Seagreaves, 13 digs from Alyse Maurer and 65 assists from Lily Frehner.

On Sept. 27, the Cheesemakers were swept by Watertown 13-25, 6-25, 9-25. Pond had six kills, an ace and seven digs, Gersbach had three kills and a block and Frehner dished out 11 assists.

“Although there were moments when we were playing with them — blocking their shots, digging their hits, and having some longer rallies — we just couldn’t stay competitive throughout the entire match,” Witt said. “As a team we have been battling illness and we were down two players.”
